What shocked everyone was the fact that he left a 22-year-old student behind to land the plane by himself. Amid the terrifying revelation, the pilot's final words have been revealed.
A flying student was left in complete shock after her instructor, Leandro Andrés Bertazzo, reportedly jumped out of a plane mid-flight. The incident, which took place on July 4, 2026 (ET), has sparked an intense online wave. Bertazzo was a pilot at Argentina's Flying Parrot Córdoba flying school, and was teaching a 22-year-old student named Rosario to fly when the lesson went horribly wrong.
According to Argentinian outlet La Nacion, the 22-year-old student, who was later identified as Rosario, said that Leandro Andrés Bertazzo was mid-lesson when he suddenly turned to her. She recalled his final words before he jumped to his death and stated:
"You know what you have to do, carry on."
According to her, Leandro Andrés Bertazzo took off his headphones, put away his mobile phone before sorting his belongings, leaving Rosario confused. However, she didn't imagine what would follow next. The 22-year-old recalled how the instructor unfastened his seatbelt, opened the plane door, and fell from a height of about 250 metres over the Toledo area.
Rosario was forced to land the plane herself, in absolute shock and horror following her instructor's jump. She reportedly notified air traffic control of the incident before barely managing to land the plane. Leandro Andrés Bertazzo's death has raised questions about mental health and people's refusal to seek help, putting others in danger as well.
It was later reported that the 22-year-old, Rosario, already had her flying licence but needed to complete her flight hours. After landing, Leandro Andrés Bertazzo's colleagues joined police to search for the 42-year-old, who was quickly located and declared dead. The school's director, Eduardo Álvarez, spoke with La Nacion after the incident and revealed that there was nothing off about the pilot before he got on the plane. He recalled:
"That day, we saw Leandro like any other. He arrived cheerful, kissing everyone as usual. The only thing that stood out was that, instead of coming in his own car as usual, he had asked a student to pick him up at the house where he lived with his parents in a neighbourhood in the city of Córdoba. They were chatting away, and everything seemed fine."
According to reports, Leandro Andrés Bertazzo was single and had no children. He was an experienced pilot and well-loved by his students and peers. When his parents were informed about the tragedy, it was Bertazzo's father who revealed that his son was going through "a rough patch" and had recently visited a psychiatric clinic. Álvarez reacted to the revelation, saying no one at the school was aware of it.
Alvarez revealed that flights are suspended if there's any condition that could affect a pilot's ability to fly. Rosario was reportedly Leandro Andrés Bertazzo's second student that day. Alvarez was quoted as saying:
"We are all shocked. He made this tragic decision on board an aircraft with another person by his side. It’s impossible to think about it or understand it, but the human mind is so complex."
