Obsession is the highest-grossing film directed by YouTuber Curry Barker. It is the tale of a lonely college student, 'Bear', played by Michael Johnston, who wished on a toy for his friend, 'Nikki', played by Inde Navarette, to fall head-over-heels-in love with him. This magical story turned into a horror flick as Bear used black magic, which turned into a terrible obsession.

Obsession plot and storyline

The film was made on a low budget with approximately USD 750,000. However, it became the highest-grossing film with over USD 400 million at the worldwide box office in July 2026. The film revolved around 'Bear' and how he meddled with black magic to make his friend fall in love with him.

To make his wish come true, he used a novelty gift, which is about a one-wish willow, to make 'Nikki' fall in love. And the wish turned true within seconds as 'Nikki' got obsessed with him. But things soon started to take a terrible turn as 'Nikki' was under the influence of the wish and was made to get close to 'Bear' without her will.

Who is the real victim in Obsession?

The film seems to be portraying 'Nikki' as the villain. The movie also suggested that 'Bear' was just an innocent guy who wanted love and meddled with a wrong wish-granting tool. But in reality, the real victim is 'Nikki', who was stripped of her free will.

She had no idea what was going on with her, and 'Bear' was taking full advantage of her situation. In fact, he even failed to make things right. Love is not a subject that can be granted by genies.

Curry Barker, the director, discussed how the character 'Nikki' was portrayed as both a villain and a victim. He stated that he wanted to make a grounded film that tells how magic is real and how it turns out to be scary. He said:

"Well, we wanted it to feel grounded, and we wanted to really lean into, ‘OK, magic is real in this world, fine. Let’s accept that, let’s move on'. And now, what you’re left with is a pretty tragic story about a man and a woman, and leaning into the realism of that was really important to me."

However, people who saw the film in theatres went on to reveal that the only victim in the film was 'Nikki', who was stripped of her free will and was assaulted just because of a person's abracadabra. A user wrote, "Some of you dudes are stupid af. How is she NOT a victim when the nice weak-willed dude who doesn’t know how to communicate fucking ruins her life, and there’s nothing she can do about it because He did it to her."

Another commented, "Nikki def is a victim, but I also don’t think Bear was a monster…no one in their right mind would actually think that wish stick would work, and even though he had multiple chances to end it all and chose a selfish route, that’s still a rlly tough position to be in too."

A third user penned, "It’s clear that Nikki truly had no control over what she was doing. After watching the whole movie, it was 100% a tragedy, and Nikki being right at the center of it all is what makes her the true victim." Another netizen wrote, "It was scary, and I felt she was portrayed as a victim and truly felt for her instead of just afraid of her. Once he kept down the path he was on and knowing she was a slave, he deserved everything he wished for; let’s just say that."
