There was a time in her life when, as a single mother, Nivea was raising four kids and got into drugs. Her cocaine addiction was so intense that there was a point when the Don't Mess With My Man singer was about to lose custody of her kids.
Nivea has been battling with Leukaemia, and earlier on that note, the singer, with her friend, Kandi Burruss, had opened up about her past addiction to cocaine. It had started off when she got famous back in her 30s. Nivea was addicted to drugs to the extent that she was on the verge of losing her children. In her words:
"I'm so grateful I'm delivered. I remember so many times, scraping through my damn carpet to find crumbs. It was terrible. It was so bad. I never thought I would get over it. I never thought I would come out of it. I'm so grateful to God. I thought it was going to consume me and I was going to lose my babies."
When Nivea was into cocaine, she was not creating music consistently but was looking after her children. She has three kids with her ex-husband, Terius "The-Dream" Nash. She also has a son with Lil Wayne. Their musical ambitions had come before hers during the relationships, and she was also overwhelmed by motherhood.
Nivea hence went into chain smoking, drinking, and doing cocaine. Nivea did not mind talking about the same, as the singer had taken a lot of time to overcome the same. She had admitted to being tired of being a mother and doing so much. She stated feeling depleted, as she felt she was of no value to anyone.
Nivea had further stated that she had been to rehab. It did not help her kick the habit, but she coped and healed from the issues related to her childhood. Nivea mentioned that she did not want to be a part of addiction and stated:
"I didn't want to do it no more. Addiction is when you're completely out of control. You can't help it. I remember the time when I was towards the end of getting over it where I was angry that I couldn't stop myself. I just wanted it out of habit at this point. Oh my God, the comedown, it's the worst. You'd rather die, it's such a shity feeling."
Nivea did agree that rehab did not work, and she was dabbling here and there. She was disgusted as she kept doing drugs and liked the same. Now she does not like what she used to do, as that took away her time from her kids. Nivea said, "I didn't like none of what I had put myself through. I guess this was me building to see me again and my worth. And I just stopped."
Speaking more about Nivea, she shared details related to her cancer diagnosis. Nivea revealed that she is grateful to the Almighty as she has been undergoing treatment and everything is going great so far. She expects to continue with the same and has not specified more details related to what type of leukaemia she has. In her words:
"'I'm very grateful for life. It's so cliché to say you don't know the time nor the hour, but it's true. It helped me put a lot of things in perspective. I live in gratitude, religiously. I'm just grateful for everything."
