While 'David' tries to explain that he did nothing wrong, the evidence and witnesses point towards him and hold him accountable for brutally killing his own son, 'Matthew'. Five years pass away, and 'David's' former sister-in-law, 'Rachel Mills' (played by Britt Lower), visits him at the prison. She arrives with a shocking photograph that proves 'Matthew' is actually alive.
Upon learning the shocking truth from 'Rachel', 'David' breaks out of jail to search for his son, 'Matthew'. He is adamant about learning about 'Matthew's' whereabouts and uncovering the truth. Tension rises as two experienced FBI agents, 'Max Williams' and 'Sarah Greer', are after 'David'. He discovers that a rich and powerful woman named 'Gertrude Payne' and an old-school mobster named 'Nicky Fisher' are behind 'Matthew's' disappearance. However, as 'David' goes deeper into the case, the person behind 'Matthew's' disappearance was not 'Nicky' but 'Rachel's' former boyfriend, 'Hayden Payne'.
While 'Hayden' had been pretending to help 'David' and 'Rachel' find 'Matthew', he kept his real motives hidden from them. Meanwhile, FBI agent, 'Sarah' finally catches 'David' after he spends days on the run. By this time, 'Sarah' has collected enough evidence that states 'David' did not kill his son, 'Matthew' and that he is still alive. Thus, she agrees to help 'David' and 'Rachel' to rescue the 3-year-old Matthew. The trio finally succeeds in rescuing 'Matthew' from the Payne family estate.
After his breakup with 'Rachel', 'Hayden' couldn’t move on from her and developed a secret obsession with her. Thus, when 'Rachel's' sister, 'Cheryl' went to a fertility clinic owned by 'Hayden's' clinic to seek treatment under 'Rachel's' name, 'Hayden' bribed to use his DNA. This led him to believe that 'Matthew' was his biological son, and he staged a horrific kidnapping.
To make everyone believe that 'Matthew' was actually murdered, 'Hayden' used the body of a terminally ill orphan and arranged things so that 'David' would be blamed for the crime. After 'David' goes to jail, 'Hayden' starts raising 'Matthew' in secret under the new name, 'Theo'. 'Gertrude Payne', mother of 'Hayden' knew the truth about 'Matthew' as she secretly had the DNA tests done that proved that 'Hayden' was connected to 'Matthew' biologically.
While 'David' tries to rescue 'Matthew', a tense fight breaks out between 'Hayden', 'Gertrude' and 'David'. This fight kills both 'Hayden' and his mom and leaves 'David' badly wounded. Fortunately, he survived the gunshot. As the truth comes out, 'David' gets free of all charges. 'Matthew' finally reunites with his family, and 'David' gets the chance to be a part of his son’s life again. He and 'Cheryl' work together to raise 'Matthew', and the little one is slowly recovering from the trauma. The series ends with 'Rachel' writing a book telling David's incredible story. She and 'David' have fallen in love by this time.
