Alanis Morissette hit an all-time low after her split from Ryan Reynolds
Alanis Morissette and Ryan Reynolds first met in February 2022 when they were both invited to Drew Barrymore’s 27th birthday party. They soon hit it off and began dating. The duo made their red carpet debut as a couple in 2003 and by 2004, Ryan and Alanis were engaged. At the time, Alanis gushed about the Deadpool actor in an interview, revealing how he was very supportive of her.
Alanis added that she felt very loved by Ryan and believed that they were the perfect combination of compatibility and incompatibility. Revealing how it made their relationship very passionate, she shared:
"He's just such a supportive creature. I feel so loved by him, in a trampoline kind of way. He's always very happy for me. We have the perfect combination of compatibility and incompatibility that makes the relationship very passionate. It's perfect. I think it's about stretching each other."

Despite being the picture-perfect couple on the outside, things between Alanis Morissette and Ryan Reynolds soon came to an end. The duo ended up splitting in 2006, and they officially called off their engagement in February 2007. A joint statement issued by Alanis and Ryan’s reps stated that they had mutually decided to end their engagement.
They added that the pair remained close friends and would continue to have the utmost love and admiration for each other. Since their breakup was a personal matter, Alanis and Ryan urged everyone through their reps to let them have some privacy. Ryan did not take long to move on from the singer and was soon back in the dating scene. He was romantically linked to Scarlett Johansson in April that year.
But things were not so easy for Alanis, as she took their breakup much harder. While speaking with the Los Angeles Times, she confessed that she had hit “rock bottom” after her split from Ryan Reynolds. Alanis claimed that she was a “full-blown love addict” and going through the heartbreak made her realize that she couldn't keep doing this as her body couldn't take it anymore.
She explained that while breakups are hard for everyone, it could easily become crippling for someone like her who is a love addict. Alanis said:
"I've been on a constant journey toward finally surrendering and hitting the rock bottom that I've been avoiding my whole life. So, this was a huge, critical juncture for me. Everything broke, and it was an amazing and horrifying time."
Alanis Morissette’s album Flavors of Entanglement was inspired by her split from Ryan Reynolds
Despite going through a breakup in the public eye, neither Alanis nor Ryan ever revealed what exactly led to their split and then eventually calling off their engagement. A few years after they split, Alanis released her hit album Flavors of Entanglement. At the time, she openly admitted that it was largely inspired by her split from Ryan.

She called creating the album a “cathartic” experience. In an interview, Alanis Morissette revealed that the song, Torch, portrayed her grief from the breakup. Part of the song’s lyrics goes:
"I miss your warmth and the thought of us bringing up our kids / And the part of you that walks with your stick-tied handkerchief / These are things that I miss."
