Is Gaslit by My Husband: The Morgan Metzer Story inspired by true events?

Lifetime's Gaslit by Gaslit by My Husband: The Morgan Metzer Story is, in fact, based on a real story. The film took inspiration from a Georgia-based woman named Morgan Metzer, whose ex-husband had gaslighted her over time. However, the last straw came when she was brutally assaulted in her own home. The incident took place in the early morning of January 1, 2021, when the Cherokee Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call from Rodney Metzer. According to an August 2021 release from the Office of the District Attorney for the Blue Ridge Judicial Circuit in Canton, Georgia, during the call, Rodney told the 911 responder that he had driven to his ex-wife's house and discovered her tied up on her deck after having been assaulted.

What really happened to Morgan and Rodney Metzer?

Morgan Metzer met her ex-husband, Rodney Metzer, when she was 14 years old, and he was 17. Their romance blossomed over the years, and the couple tied the knot in 2009 when Morgan turned 21. However, a series of family tragedies, including the loss of his brother to leukaemia and the loss of their first child to a heart defect, changed Rodney for the worse. In 2012, Morgan gave birth to twins, but soon after, Rodney lost his job, which further made him more abusive, both emotionally and physically. After years of Rodney telling Morgan she was to blame for the violence inflicted upon her, Morgan filed for divorce in 2020. Nonetheless, she didn't know it wasn't the end of her troubles.

Where are Morgan and Rodney Metzer now?

The film, Gaslit by My Husband: The Morgan Metzer Story, follows events surrounding the troubled marriage between Rodney and Morgan. It further explores how their shifting dynamics led to the shocking night. The core theme in Gaslit by My Husband: The Morgan Metzer Story was Morgan's years of physical and mental trauma during her marriage to Rodney. In 2020, Morgan finally filed for divorce from Rodney. The divorce was finalised the same year. However, Rodney reportedly continued attempting to reconcile, including faking cancer, according to 48 Hours.

However, after a brief period of contact, Morgan asked Rodney to leave on New Year's Eve in 2020. Nonetheless, in the early hours of January 1, 2021, she was found assaulted at her own residence by a masked intruder. Morgan was zip-tied, beaten, and sexually assaulted. Investigators later identified Rodney as the attacker. Following the investigation, Rodney was sentenced to 25 years in prison. The journey of bouncing back from such a traumatic event was not easy for Morgan.

She faced challenges while recovering from the trauma, but decided to rebuild her life. Morgan eventually began attending therapy and worked to move forward from the experience. Currently, she is focused on raising her two children and using her experience to help others facing similar situations. In a conversation with 48 Hours, she was quoted as saying:

"I'm trying to raise awareness for...narcissism and gaslighting. I want to help women realise they're in a situation before it gets too bad. If I don't take the bad that came of this, that I feel God wants me to do, it's like, why did it happen? It would have happened for no reason. I've got to take the pain and turn that into something that's powerful to help women."
