In a latest interview, Mackenzie Shirilla's prison girlfriend revealed how the former boasted her sickening jail nickname.
Mackenzie Shirilla is leading the new headlines after Netflix aired a documentary The Crash, which featured the harrowing case involving her. The documentary follows the high-profile Ohio criminal case of Mackenzie Shirilla, a 17-year-old (now 21). She was convicted of dual murder of her 20-year-old boyfriend, Dominic Russo, and their friend, 19-year-old Davion Flanagan.
As the case is again in limelight, there are many new details that has surfaced recently. When Shirilla went to the Ohio Reformatory for Women in 2023, she got romantically involved with another prisoner, Shyann Topping. In an interview with People, Topping recalled one of their conversations, where Shirilla boasted about her prison nickname in her all-women lockup as she said:
“We started talking and she told me her nickname was ‘Shirilla the killa,’ like, that’s what her bunkmates called her.”
Topping revealed that she dated the 21-year-old Shirilla when they were inside the prison. She called Shirilla as a very demanding girlfriend, who would get upset if she didn’t meet her on time. Topping also revealed that the two would often get intimate in the prison yard. Topping also tole People that she became Shirilla’s supporter after listening to the details she gave about the crash and the injustice she suffered during the trial.
Since Topping was incarcerated with Shirilla, she only knew what Shirilla told her. Their romantic relationship came to an end when Topping was released from the prison. Even after leaving the prison, Topping believed that Shirilla was framed and was all set to help Shirilla to get her out of the prison.
But while studying the details of the case, Topping realised that truth was something else and Shirilla wasn’t the person she portrayed herself to be. Elaborating about the same, Topping shared:
“When I was in [prison], I honestly believed maybe she's not guilty because of the limited information I had. Then I began to think, 'OK, maybe we can get her out.' Then, when I saw all the evidence, I was like 'whoa’. When I first got out I was like, 'Oh, they don't know what this girl's been through.' She could be the sweetest girl ever, but if she doesn't like you she's the Devil."
Mackenzie Shirilla’s case dates back to 2022, when a 17-year-old Shirilla drove a Toyota Camry through Strongsville, Ohio, with her boyfriend, 20-year-old Dominic Russo, and their friend, 19-year-old Davion Flanagan. She crashed the car into a commercial building. Reports suggest that she was driving 100 miles per hour, and the crash took the lives of both Dom and Davion, although she herself survived.
Investigators cited the absence of skid marks or signs of braking attempts as evidence and argued that the crash was deliberate. Assistant Cuyahoga County Prosecutor, Tim Troup told the court that the teen wanted to murder Russo after their months-long fling fizzled out. Soon Mackenzie was convicted of four counts of murder, four counts of felonious assault, two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide, and one count each of drug possession and possessing criminal tools.
