Kaylee, who was just 18 years old met with a car accident. It was her father, Joshua Hottle, who shared the tragic news in an emotional Facebook livestream using American Sign Language (ASL).
Kaylee Hottle was born in Georgia in an all-deaf family. Her father, Joshua Hottle comes from a family with four generations of deaf relatives. On the other hand, Kaylee’s mom, Ketsi Carlson, was born in Korea and was adopted into a family in Wisconsin. Kaylee’s parents are both deaf and the actress was born in a deaf culture.
Kaylee, who attended the Texas School for the Deaf, was very fluent in American Sign Language. She was very active in track and field and loved her school since everyone conversed in sign language there. She once spoke about her school and revealed, “It's a great school for deaf students to go to. I have deaf teachers, and everyone is able to communicate with me through sign language.”
Kaylee was loved for her role in Godzilla vs. Kong. The young star was scouted by casting director Sarah Halley Finn after she was spotted in a commercial for the video relay app Convo. Producer Alex Garcia once revealed that Kaylee was the perfect choice to play ‘Jia’ in the film. In an interview with Chron, Kaylee spoke about the importance of deaf actors getting more roles in Hollywood and stated:
“I see a lot of positive things. There's not a lot of deaf roles or opportunities out there. And so now we're able, [and] I'm able to get them, and I think I've seen more and more growth and positivity.”
Kylee was one of the passengers who was travelling in a Honda Accord that left the road and struck a culvert in Ijamsville. The driver was a 19-year-old man from Frederick, who was taken to hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. A second passenger at the scene refused treatment. Although Kaylee Hottle was immediately transported to a trauma centre, she succumbed to her injuries. Investigators believe speed may have played a role in the crash.
It was Kaylee’s father, Joshua, who announced the news of the actress’ death. According to him, the fatal car crash took place when he was visiting Texas. While there, he received a call from authorities informing him about the accident. The called Joshua for the second time to inform him about the unfortunate news that Kaylee’s heart had stopped working when they were on their way to the hospital. The investigation is ongoing currently.
He later confirmed the tragedy to TMZ, saying he was travelling from Texas to Maryland to bring her body home. In the interaction, he stated that her the family is devastated by Kylee’s untimely and tragic death and said:
“Kaylee’s mom and four siblings are crushed. They are together at home, grieving.”
Following news of Hottle’s death, several actors penned their condolences and penned heartfelt messages for the departed soul. From Millie Bobby Brown to Oscar winner Marlee Matlin and several oher celebrities penned their tribute for the young star. Alaqua Cox, Hottle’s co-star in the upcoming film What Doesn’t Kill Us and a fellow deaf actor, wrote: “I’m so heartbroken. My heart goes out to her family during this unimaginable time.”
