According to reports, the Netflix miniseries is based on the famous Polish novel Lalka (The Doll) by Boleslaw Prus, which was written in the late 1800s. The six episodes of the show will premiere on the same day. Remember the hit Netflix series Bridgerton Season 4, which explored the themes of love and social status? The Doll gives a similar kind of vibe.
The six-episode series The Doll revolves around 'Stanislaw Wokulsi', a successful, self-made businessman. He falls deeply in love with 'Izabela Lecka', a beautiful woman from an aristocratic, wealthy family. However, the major issue in their relationship is that they come from different social backgrounds. 'Wokulsi' hails from a less privileged background and builds his own wealth, while 'Izabela' belongs to the upper-class aristocracy.
'Wokulsi' is the central character of The Doll. Actor Tomasz Schuchardt stepped into the shoes of the central character, 'Wokulsi', while actress Sandra Drzymalska would be seen playing the role of 'Izabela'. In the series, 'Wokulsi' is shown as an ambitious man who fights tooth and nail to improve his social position. He works hard and becomes successful.
However, things change for 'Wokulsi' when he falls in love with 'Izabela'. To win her love, he is ready to do anything. In fact, 'Wokulsi' also sees his relationship with 'Izabela' as a way to enter the high society he has always wanted to be part of. So his love for 'Izabela' becomes mixed with his desire to become socially powerful and be accepted by the upper class. The series particularly focuses on love and obsession, rich vs. less privileged people, social class differences, ambition, and unrequited love.
The story is set in 19th-century Warsaw, so the audience will see the clothes, lifestyle, and society of that period. As per reports, The Doll is based on Prus’ second novel, Lalka, out of the four novels he wrote. The novel is very famous in Poland. Some people even consider it the greatest Polish novel ever written. Pawel Maslona is the director of the series.

Sandra Drzymalska, who plays 'Izabela', the main female character, was nominated for a Polish Academy Award for her performance in the 2022 film EO. The Netflix audience may know Sandra for her performance in the comedy series Sexify.
Tomasz Schuchardt, who plays 'Stanislaw Wokulski', the male lead, is an experienced Polish actor who has appeared in many films and TV shows. He previously worked with the OTT giant Netflix in the 2021 movie Operation Hyacinth. Alongside Tomasz and Sandra, The Doll also features Dariusz Chojnacki, Jacek Braciak, Julia Wyszynska, Magdalena Cielecka, Maria Kania, Piotr Pacek, Monika Frajczyk, and Piotr Adamczyk.
Ever since the premise of The Doll came to light, people have been pointing out the similarities between the two series, The Doll and Bridgerton. The reason behind this is that in the hit series, Bridgerton, the themes of love and social status were explored. In fact, The Doll also focuses on the following themes. However, it is worth mentioning that the two series are not the same at a deeper level.
