Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai's wedding made headlines back in the day and now the photos are back in the news as fans spotted that the 'kalgi' worn by AB might actually belong to the Ambanis.
Isha Ambani left everyone fascinated by her jewels-adorned ensemble for the 2026 Met Gala. The businesswoman donned jewels worth crores to the grand event. Isha donned a beautiful saree with a structured cape from Gaurav Gupta to the Met Gala, and her jewels and the imitation mango left everyone with their jaws dropped. However, days after the biggest fashion night, fans have finally zoomed in on every piece worn by Isha and have found some resemblance between the 'Nizam jewel' she wore on her back and the kalgi Abhishek Bachchan wore to his wedding.
Yes! Nearly two decades after Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's grand wedding, the old pictures of their wedding are back in the limelight. And you guessed it, it is because of the similarity between the 'Nizam jewel' Isha Ambani wore to the 2026 Met Gala and Abhishek's kalgi. So, as the internet wonders whether it's the same jewel or not, let's take a look at what we know.
The Guru couple's wedding was one of Bollywood's most talked-about events, and once again, the old photos of Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan are suddenly everywhere. And this time, the reason behind the netizen's obsession with their star-studded wedding is the royal jewellery. After the recently concluded Met Gala 2026 brought historic Indian jewels into global conversation, fans quickly noticed a fascinating detail from Abhishek and Aishwarya's 2007 wedding celebrations.
According to many eagle-eyed netizens, Abhishek Bachchan seems to have worn a striking kalgi on his turban that looked remarkably similar to jewellery associated with the legendary Nizam of Hyderabad collection. For the unversed, the piece was worn by Isha Ambani to the 2026 Met Gala and previously by her mother, Nita Ambani.
The curiosity around the kalgi began after Isha Ambani flaunted the gorgeous royal piece during her 2026 Met Gala appearance, along with several other pieces worn by her from her mother, Nita Ambani's collection. With the event celebrating extravagant fashion, archival Indian jewels once again found themselves under the spotlight. Amid all the online chatter, fans dug out photographs from the Bachchan wedding and zoomed in on Abhishek Bachchan's regal wedding look and noticed how the kalgi on his head matched the one worn by Isha, leading to questions about whether it was the same kalgi.
For the unversed, Abhishek Bachchan wore a beautiful ivory and gold sherwani for his big day. The gorgeous piece was designed by celebrated couturiers, Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla. For the grand event, Abhishek had embraced a full royal aesthetic for the ceremony, given that the Bachchan family is no less than the royalty of the entertainment industry, the ensemble was pretty on point. However, what caught everyone's attention now was the ornate headpiece attached to his safa, featuring pearls, emerald tones and diamonds that many believe resemble pieces linked to the famed Nizam jewels.
However, was it the same piece? Well, designer, Abu Jani previously revealed that Abhishek Bachchan wore some of the finest jewellery sourced specially for the wedding. From rare Mughal-inspired necklaces to ruby-studded details on his sherwani, their idea was to create a look worthy of royalty. However, there is no confirmation that the two pieces were the same. Nonetheless, there are some reports that suggest that the Ambanis purchased the kalgi in around 2019, which would make it highly unlikely for the family to lend it to Abhishek Bachchan.
The Nizam collection was acquired by the Government of India in 1995 for Rs. 218 crores. However, today the kalgi alone costs around Rs. 200 crore. While the collection of jewels is safely secured in RBI vaults, some pieces, including the Nizam's sarpech or kalgi, are now part of Nita Ambani's private collection.
The Met Gala has once again increased the world's interest in Indian craftsmanship and heritage jewellery. This year, conversations around royal Indian gems exploded online after several historically inspired pieces made headlines. However, this is not the first time that some magnificent jewels were worn at the Met red carpet.
In 2025, singer and actor, Diljit Dosanjh also made news after reports claimed he could not access the iconic Cartier Patiala necklace for the Met Gala because it was on long-term display at London's Victoria & Albert Museum. The debate intensified when fans recalled that parts of the necklace had previously appeared on influencer, Emma Chamberlain at a previous Met Gala. Even without the original piece, Diljit paid tribute to Punjabi royalty with a custom-made replica necklace.
