She was found hanging at her residence in Birbhum as per Kolkata police. As per reports, Brishti was going through a lot from pain of losing her job to facing marital issues.
Brishti Mukherjee hailed from Birbhum's Kusumba village in Rampurhat. Her father, Nihar Mukherjee is Mamata Banerjee's maternal cousin and a local Trinamool congress leader as per reports. Talking about Brishti, she had been suffering from depression for past few years.
It all started after she lost her job at a young age and was undergoing treatment for the same as per her family members. Her body was found at a room on the second floor of her house at Kusumba village. As senior police officer revealed that her body was sent for post-mortem examination and an investigation is ongoing around the matter. So far, the police cannot determine the circumstances leading to her death.
For those who don't know, in March 2023, Brishti lost her job as non-teaching staff after the Supreme Court and the Calcutta High Court nullified the selection of thousands of jobs over corruption. Nearly 26,000 teaching and non-teaching jobs in government schools. It was claimed that people got employed illegally citing favouritism and alleged exchange of cash as per court's documents.
Brishti's name was included in the list of candidated who lost their job after the High Court's order on the cash-for-jobs scam. The case left an outrage in West Bengal and emerged as one of the biggest corruption scap during Mamata Banerjee's 15 year tenure. At that time, state education minister, Partha Chatterjee, and several MLAs from the ruling party and senior officials of the School Service Comission and education board were arrested.
Not only this, but Brishti was also going through a tough time as her and her husband had filed for divorce. The family members also revealed that Brishti was suffering from depression for the past few years and was getting treated for the same. Sources said a divorce proceeding between Brishti and her husband had been going on for several months.
Her in-laws are from Ayash village and the deceased also had a 12-year-old child. The police are also investigating whether her current situation forced her to end her life or is it her depression that took her life. The police shared:
"The body has been sent for post-mortem examination. An investigation is underway. The circumstances leading to the death will be established after the post-mortem and other procedural inquiries."
It is worth noting that Mamata Banerjee's niece died days after senior Trinamool Congress leader and former West Bengal Assembly Deputy Speaker, Asish Banerjee was found hanging inside a party office in Rampurhat. The five-time former MLA left a suicide note,w herein he denied all the allegations of corruption and shared that his name was embroiled in the controversy to malign him.
