Woman Was Declared Clinically Dead During Childbirth, Revived After Performing Postmortem C-Section

One such horrific experience was shared by a pregnant woman named Nicole, whose world turned upside down before she could deliver her baby.
Pregnant Nicole was clinically dead for 45 minutes
For Nicole, giving birth to her third baby was the most cherished dream, but it soon turned into a medical nightmare when she suddenly stopped breathing. As Nicole and her husband, Anthony, were thrilled to welcome their third baby, she started documenting the birthing process. While recording the video, she said, “Hey baby number three. We’re in the hospital. Can’t wait to see you.”
While documenting the childbirth, Nicole started feeling nauseous. A sense of fear and doom just crept over her body, and all she remembers was not being able to breathe. Speaking about the same to the TLC reality medical series ER: Caught On Camera, Nicole said:
“I felt an overwhelming sense of doom just come over my body. I remember saying I can’t breathe. I can’t breathe. And, and that was the last thing I remember.”
Within just 10 minutes after recording, Nicole suffered a catastrophic medical emergency and passed away. While in labor, her heart stopped beating and she was pronounced dead. It so happened that Nicole experienced an amniotic fluid embolism. It is a rare fatal condition where amniotic fluid enters the mother's bloodstream and causes a fatal reaction. It can lead to cardiac arrest and organ collapse.
After Nicole suddenly stopped reacting, a nurse immediately began chest compressions. Anthony panicked and asked the doctors about his wife, and they said, “Your wife has coded. She’s technically expired.” Nicole’s heart had stopped beating, and she was clinically dead for 45 minutes while medical teams performed CPR and life-saving interventions.
Nicole was revived after a postmortem C-section but suffered a major loss
While Anthony was shaken by the news that the doctors had passed him, the medical team rushed Nicole to the operating room and performed a postmortem C-section to save the baby. However, while trying to save the baby, doctors also did their best to bring Nicole back to life. Soon, Nicole’s pulse returned, and she was revived.
However, what happened to her moments before the surgery left a huge loss for her. Nicole had suffered a massive hemorrhage, and it could have again proven fatal as she was bleeding out into her uterus. According to surgeon Dr. Erin Nance, severe bleeding can occur when the uterus fails to contract after childbirth, especially if it is a C-section. This will lead to a lot of blood loss, and to stop it, Nicole’s uterus was removed.
Nicole was discharged from the hospital a week after her delivery, but it changed the way she looked at life. She was given a new life and wanted to cherish it to the fullest. Amniotic fluid embolism that Nicole suffered is a condition that occurs in 6 out of 100,000 deliveries. It is the leading cause of peripartum heart attack in the US. It is one of the most difficult conditions to determine, as its symptoms, like shortness of breath or difficulty breathing and a sudden drop in blood pressure, are very common in pregnancy.
