'Widow's Bay' Season 1 Ending Explained, The Curse And Ruth's Big Secret Sets The Stage For Season 2

The finale of Widow's Bay Season 1, titled We Hope You Enjoyed Your Time, has left viewers gripping their seats. The show quickly became the audience's favourite watch, with an intense storyline that has had them on edge. However, as the show ends on a cliffhanger, fans are now intrigued about the show's future.

Widow's Bay Season 1 ending explained

Widow's Bay Season 1 has come to an end. However, its finale was anything but what fans expected. By Episode 6, the audience was familiar with the root cause of the spooky and scary happenings on Widow's Bay. Nonetheless, nothing could have prepared them for how the show concluded the season. For the unversed, the curse on Widow's Bay is the result of a deal made between the Devil and the town's original founder, 'Richard Warren', the same deal that also granted him immortality.

In Episode 10, 'Loftis' and 'Wyck Crawford' exhume 'Warren's' undead body and then kill him, assuming that it will break the curse once and for all. However, it didn't. It turns out some of 'Warren's' children survived, and as long as his descendants are alive, the curse remains intact. This leads to the events of Episode 10, where 'Loftis' traced the 'Warren' family tree to a surprising stop, his elderly secretary, 'Ruth Livingston', who never had any children of her own (or so they thought).

On a stormy night, while the rest of the town hides out in an eerie shelter, 'Mayor Loftis' visits 'Ruth' in her home, determined to kill her and actually end the curse. However, surprise, surprise! She reveals that she has a secret daughter, and it's none other than 'Tom's' dead wife, meaning that his son, 'Evan', is actually Warren's last living descendant. But before the story could progress, 'Sheriff Bechir Clemmons' shows up and shoots 'Ruth' to end the curse and save his own wife, while 'Tom' keeps the truth about his son a secret.

Hero Murai explains the ending of Widow's Bay Season 1

The storm finally lifts, and Widow's Bay survives to see another sunrise, for now. However, this may be a massive cliffhanger, especially for a show that was only renewed for Season 2 less than a week ago. In a conversation with Polygon, the show's executive producer, Hiro, who also directed the finale, reflects on what the ending means and states:

"I've always thought about this show as a story about Tom's relationship to the town. The throughline for the whole season is Tom accepting that this place is what it is. So even though we don't get into the minutia of what ultimately that thing is underneath the island, and whether we're going to save this town or not, really the arc is whether Tom can accept the reality of this place, and if he's willing to do what it takes to sort of protect it."

What does this mean for Widow's Bay Season 2?

In the same conversation, Hiro also reflects on how Widow's Bay Season 1 ending will impact Season 2. He shared that there are some obvious loose plot threads that he is extremely excited to pick up in Widow's Bay Season 2. Talking about the same, he said:

"You're going to have to ask Katie [Dippold] because I've been trying not to bother her about it. I know she's been kind of tooling around with different ways to extend this universe and pick up where we left off. By the end of the season, we're kind of resetting the table. But Tom has the secret that he has to kind of keep from the rest of the town, and he and Bechir have this sort of relationship now. There's a lot to play with."
