After more than seven years of marriage and a child, Amy Schumer has officially filed for a divorce from her husband, Chris Fischer. Speculations about a rift in the marriage had been making rounds towards the end of 2025, and the comedian-actress had dismissed divorce rumours back then, only to announce a split from Fischer in December. Now, reports confirm that the couple has quietly filed the paperwork.
Amy Schumer and David Fischer mutually file for divorce
According to New York County court records, Amy Schumer filed for divorce from Chris Fischer on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, as first confirmed by PEOPLE. The filing comes just weeks before what would have been the couple's eighth wedding anniversary on February 13. About a month ago, the comedian had announced on Instagram that she and Fischer had parted ways.

After months of media speculation, Schumer first addressed her split on December 12, 2025. The Trainwreck actress wrote that the breakup was "amicable" and both she and Schumer still had their family as their first priority. Schumer wrote at the time:
"Chris and I have made the difficult decision to end our marriage after 7 years. We love each other very much and will continue to focus on raising our son. We would appreciate people respecting our privacy at this time."

Schumer, 44, and Fischer, 45, share a son, Gene. The estranged couple has filed for an uncontested divorce, as per USA TODAY, which means there will be no dispute over finances, property, or custody. Married or not, both are intent on keeping their six-year-old's life stable. In an earlier Page Six report, Schumer and Fischer had been living under the same roof after their split for the sake of Gene. An insider told the outlet that both parents wanted to be involved in raising their little one, and the comedian believed co-parenting worked best when both the mother and the father are closely present.
What led to Amy Schumer and Chris Fischer's divorce after 7+ years of marriage?
When rumours of a split first surfaced last year, the timing of it made many believe that Schumer's dramatic weight loss might have something to do with it. However, the comedian had dismissed the claims, clarifying that whatever happened between her and Fischer had nothing to do with her recent weight loss or his success as a James Beard Award–winning chef.
According to people close to the former couple, there wasn’t a dramatic catalyst. Towards the end of the marriage, both were struggling to make it work. In November 2025, sources insisted the two were committed to working things out. By December 1, Schumer addressed the rumours directly, writing, "Fingers crossed we make it through. He's the best." However, less than two weeks later, Schumer confirmed that it had not worked. While no specific reason was highlighted, sources close to the couple suggested that the growing emotional distance and lifestyle changes were causing them to drift apart.

They had been facing challenges in their marriage for quite some time
Amy Schumer and Chris Fischer first met in 2017 through the latter's sister, and their friendship quickly developed into a romantic relationship. Later, Amy recalled on The Howard Stern Show how they surprised fans by marrying in a last-minute Malibu ceremony in February 2018. In May 2019, the couple welcomed their son, Gene.
Schumer has previously spoken candidly about the complexities of her marriage to Chris Fischer, which became more apparent after he was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder shortly after they wed. In her 2019 Netflix special Growing, the comedian explained how their differences influenced their relationship and day-to-day dynamic.

She later told The Hollywood Reporter that when creating her Hulu series Life & Beth, she was intentional about portraying marriage with honesty and respect, drawing on elements of her real-life relationship. While the breakup has been described publicly as amicable, sources say the couple had largely been living separate lives well before they officially confirmed the split.
For now, Schumer and Fischer remain connected as co-parents. And in the comedian's own words, they are still family.
