After spending the first episode getting the grieving cowboy to join his old war buddy, the US Marshals have now decided to enter the Yellowstone franchise, which is dangerously close to 'Dutton's' dark family secret. 'Kayce' and his new team are off to search for some criminals operating in a place called The Zone of Death. While the team was excited about an area around the Montana/Wyoming border where the land is government-owned, and there is no population, no candidates for a jury, and thus no way to prosecute any crimes that occur there, 'Kyace' could hear the alarms go off in his head.
For the unversed, 'Kayce's' family had been dumping bodies there for more than a century (they called it "the Train Station"). It's also where his adopted brother, 'Jamie Dutton', who is still considered a missing person, was unceremoniously laid to rest at the end of Yellowstone. So, as the team's boss, 'Gifford' grows suspicious of 'Kayce', and it seems like the family will have some serious trouble coming their way.
Showrunner, Spencer Hudnut sat for a candid conversation with TV Guide and revealed why the 'Train Station' was revealed so early in the show. He shared that the 'Duttons' have been in Montana for over 140 years, which means there are a whole lot of skeletons in their closet. He added how ignoring those secrets would have been "foolish" on their part. He added:
"As Mo says in the pilot, violence finds the Duttons. I do think Kayce's struggle this season is to find a new path for himself and Tate, but also, how can you do that when you are from a family that has had such a big, not always positive, impact on Montana? So we will revisit it again. This show needs to stand on its own, but I think to turn our backs on such a rich backstory would be doing a disservice to the show."
In the same conversation, Spencer reflected on how there are things they can build the upcoming episodes on, including 'Kayce's' relationship with 'Rainwater' and his father. He added how Taylor had already put some of these arcs to an end. However, the fact that no one has found 'Jamie' so far was interesting to him, especially now that 'Kayce' wants to be a Marshal. He talked about how he would keep asking questions, given that these were the biggest cold cases that were related to the family. Spencer also poked at the idea of exploring the evolving relationship between 'Kayce' and his family.
Later in the conversation, Spencer reveals whether there are particular Yellowstone moments they will be referencing, or if it will be purely about finding out who 'Kayce' is. He shared that a lot of things happened with 'Tate', which left 'Kayce' feeling guilty. However, now that he is a single parent, his challenges have increased, and he will be thinking a lot about his past missteps as he tries to wrangle a 17-year-old.

Spencer further shared what viewers could expect to see in Marshals. He shared that the US Marshals run down fugitives, including manhunts. He added that a US Marshal show in NYC might be more limited than one in Montana. He added that they have tapped into the lack of infrastructure and the massive federal and state cuts. Spencer added how they want to maintain the authenticity of the show and stated:
"So, there's not a ton of law enforcement in the region where we find our marshals, which allows them — and the Marshal badge, actually — to be deputised. They can go work with other agencies. They can work with state, local, and federal agencies, which gives us a lot of ground to cover and a lot of flexibility in what our people are doing. And what's great about running down a fugitive is you don't always catch them, but you could catch them in the middle of something super exciting that another agency might run point on."
Spencer shared that while working on SEAL Team, he met people who are special operators and have also worked on some cop shows. He revealed how he doesn't feel like he has it in him to play a role like that, as there are really "scary and dangerous" things in the show that take a lot from one's personal life. He concluded by sharing how the goal was "not just to make cookie-cutter people who are just there because 'to serve and protect is the highest honour'". He added:
"I think what's fun for us in the first season is that we really explore and unpack the journeys that these characters have gone on and what got them to this point, what makes them want to wear the badge. For some people, it's to avenge the death of a parent, like Andrea. For people like Cal, he's just trying to find purpose and atone for some sins from his past. And Belle, we will reveal that there's a reason why she's trying to make Montana a better place, which ties directly to her backstory."
