Jeremiah "Shawn" Duffey, aged 48, was a local of Owasso, Oklahoma. He was well-known in his community as a youth basketball coach. In fact, he also used the online nickname, "Duff Daddy". Before the tragic incident, he used to coach children's basketball teams. Therefore, he was involved extensively in youth sports within his community.
However, his personal life came under national attention in July 2026. Initially, serious allegations came up against him. According to court records, another basketball coach allegedly found him alone with a 15-year-old player on his team.
Later, that girl's mother filed for an emergency protective order against Shawn. She alleged that he had sent inappropriate messages to the teenager and asked her out to a hotel room during a tournament. Moreover, he offered her money to keep his behavior and their conversation under wraps.
Some court filings also stated that after being asked about these allegations, Shawn threatened to commit suicide and left the place for some time. Once again, these allegations have surfaced amid multiple legal filings made before the fatal shooting.

Shawn Duffey tied the knot with Sara Gilson (also Duffey). She was a hairstylist and a TikTok content creator. Sara's content is mostly focused on her family and lifestyle. The couple had two children together. But their relationship reportedly got strained in recent years.
Some documents filed in the case revealed that Sara had earlier tried to get a protective order against Shawn in 2021. At the same time, after finding out about the allegations involving a 15-year-old, she filed for divorce. In fact, she got another emergency protective order that ordered him to stay away from her and move out of their shared home.
Meanwhile, just weeks before her death, Sara shared a viral TikTok video related to the situation. She used a popular social media trend for the same. In turn, Sara mentioned that she was getting prepared for the day when a Netflix documentary might be made about her finding out about the allegations against her husband. It got popular before the tragic incident.
All about Sara Gilson and Shawn Duffey's fatal murder-suicide
According to the Owasso Police Department, officers went to Sara's home on the evening of July 23, 2026, after they got a 911 call. They mentioned that the call was made by Sara's son, who saw the shooting and informed the emergency responders. But when the officers came to the scene, they saw both Sara and Shawn dead from gunshot wounds.
Initial Police investigation suggests that Shawn violated his active protective order and went to Sara's home. In turn, he fatally shot her before killing himself.
Authorities also clarified that the protective order issued in June 2026 was still in effect at the time of the incident. Meanwhile, neighbors explained the tragedy as another example that domestic violence can affect anyone. It is irrespective of their background and circumstances.
After Sara's death, her family and friends have started a GoFundMe campaign to support her two kids. The fundraiser describes Sara as a devoted mother whose life revolved around her kids. It also says that the donations would help to cover education, funeral, and other immediate expenses for her kids.
