Who Was Bengali Filmmaker Anik Dutta? Died After Falling From His Roof, Had Respiratory Issues

In a piece of heartbreaking news, Bengali filmmaker, Anik Dutta, at the age of 60, passed away on May 27, 2026, in Kolkata. According to reports on social media, Anik had sustained severe injuries after he fell from the roof of his home in Kolkata. Some reports mention that Anik was 58 at the time of his demise and was taken to a hospital near Dhakuria. He was in a critical state and could not make it till the end.

Bengali filmmaker, Anik Dutta succumbed to his injuries, and reports stated that he was dealing with respiratory health issues for some time now. The Bengali cultural and film community has been mourning the filmmaker's loss. Anik was known to be one of the most known voices in the Bengali cinema and was known to blend nostalgia, satire with themes of social commentary and varied cinematic innovation in his movies.

The film was a tribute to the legendary filmmaker, Satyajit Ray, who was known for Devdas, Pather Panchali and more. Bengali filmmaker, Anik Dutta knew how to blend themes of horror, politics and satire in Bhooter Bhabhishyat.

The movie was known as a grand milestone in Bengali cinema, and Anik later carried forward a similar storytelling approach in Aschorjyo Prodeep. For the unversed, Anik had passed away at Hindustan Park, and then he was soon rushed to the hospital. Anik had worked with Jeetu Kamal, who was in Aparajito, which had got a strong response from their fans and had also performed well at the box office. Anik has also been known for his work in Aparajito 2.

Who was Anik Dutta?

Anik Dutta was the grandson of Narendra Chandra Dutta who was the founder of United Bank Of India. Anik had made his directorial debut back in 2012 with Bhooter Bhabishyat. It had stars such as Sabyasachi Chakrabarty, Parambrata Chatterjee, Paran Bandopadhyay, Swastika Mukherjee, Mir Afsar Ali, and Saswata Chatterjee. Anik was also known for directing movies such as Borunbabur Bondhu (2020), apart from Bhooter Bhabishyat (2012) and Aparajito (2022). Bhooter Bhabishyat was loved due to the intelligent writing. characters that stayed in the minds of the audience. The movie gave Anik overnight recognition and he was known for getting new ideas to the Bengali movie domain. The film was called as one of the landmark movies in the history of Bengali filmmaking.

Anik Dutta post the success of Bhooter Bhabishyat went and directed Aschorjo Prodip which is based on a novel by famous Bengali author called Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay. Anik then went to make movies such as Meghnad Badh Rahasya, Bhobishyoter Bhoot and also Borunbabur Bondhu. Each of these movies had a very distinctive storytelling that had humour, social criticism and also a lot of emotional depth. Well, it was Aparajito in 2022 that created Anik's base as one of the leading filmmakers of the time. Jeetu Kamal was roped in for the role and showcased the creative struggles behind Satyajit Ray's creation of Pather Panchali. The film was shot in black and white and showcased the atmospheric situation of Bengal in the 1950s. Anik had paid tribute to the artistic vision of Satyajit Ray.

Aparajito had created wonders at the box office, and it received a lot of honours at the National Film Awards.
