Amari Thompson is Tristan Thompson's younger brother, who lives with a condition called Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS). It is a rare and severe form of epilepsy that causes frequent seizures, sometimes multiple attacks within a day, and significant developmental challenges. He uses a wheelchair, is nonverbal, and requires round-the-clock care.
Amari’s only caregiver was his mother, Andrea Thompson, who died suddenly of a heart attack in January 2023. Following her death, Tristan became the legal guardian of Amari. A judge in Los Angeles made it official in February 2024, giving him guardianship so his younger brother will continue to get the care and support he needs.
So, how did Khloé Kardashian get in the caregiving scenario? After their mother passed away, Tristan became Amari’s legal guardian, but it was Khloé Kardashian who became the primary caretaker of Amari. On a July 2025 episode of her Khloé in Wonder Land podcast, the mother of two said she has stepped in to help the NBA star juggle his busy basketball career without having to worry about his brother.
The reality star said Tristan’s NBA schedule requires him to be on the road constantly, which makes it difficult for Amari, who has multiple seizures a day, to fly often or move from city to city. She shared during an AMA session on her podcast:
“Tristan is in the NBA, and he is in a different state literally every other day or every few days, and it's just not conducive for Amari to be on that many planes. Amari has a handful of seizures a day with the type of epilepsy that he has... So Amari stays in LA with me, and I have chosen to take care of him and be there for him, because it's not good that he travels.”
Amari has become an important part of Khloé's household alongside her children, True and Tatum, whom she shares with Tristan. She has developed a newfound respect for primary care providers and praised the dedicated caregivers who assist with his daily needs.
Despite ending her on-again, off-again relationship with Tristan Thompson, Khloé's commitment to Amari has never depended on their romance. She recalled becoming close friends with Tristan's late mother, Andrea Thompson, years before her death and often helping with Amari's medical appointments and specialist care.
"Amari deserves my love and care, regardless of where me and Tristan stand," Khloé said, adding that her promise to Andrea had nothing to do with her relationship with Tristan. She has also spoken about how Amari's presence has positively influenced her children and extended family, making them learn the true essence of compassion, empathy, gratitude, and unconditional love.

To celebrate Amari's milestone birthday, Kardashian shared a heartfelt Instagram tribute featuring photos of the two together. Calling him "one of God's gentlest reminders of what truly matters," she thanked Amari for showing everyone around him the meaning of unconditional love, resilience, joy, and gratitude before ending her message.
"Happy Birthday sweet Amari," the reality star wrote. She continued in her heartfelt post, "You are one of God’s gentlest reminders of what truly matters. Everyone who knows you is better because of you. Thank you for reminding us every single day how we should be so completely grateful for the smallest of things and what unconditional love, joy, grace, resilience, and gratitude truly look like."
Pairing the caption with a carousel of photos and videos with Amari, Kardashian concluded, "We love you more than you'll ever know. Happy 20th Birthday, our sweet angel." Her mom, Kris Jenner, also paid tribute to Amari, describing him as "our sweet angel boy" and thanking him for bringing "love, joy, and light" to the Kardashian family.
Khloé's continued support for Amari has become one of the most heartfelt aspects of her relationship with Tristan Thompson's family, showing that some family bonds are forever.
