A while back, he spoke for the first time about his July OWI arrest. He took to his Instagram handle to share how he developed a "dependence" on pain medication after his NFL career that turned into an "over-reliance" on alcohol.
On July 23, 2026, Tony was stopped by police in Milwaukee for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and on September 1, 2026, he pleaded "no contest" to the charge. Amid this, the focus has shifted to Tony’s personal life. He is happily married to Candice Crawford.
Meet Tony Romo's wife, Candice Crawford
Tony Romo's wife, Candice Crawford, was born in Texas. She studied journalism at the University of Missouri. During her college days, Candice worked as a reporter and sports anchor for the local NBC affiliate KOMU-TV. She also interned for the Dallas CBS affiliate KTVT, covering the Cowboys for The Blitz. After graduation, she worked for CW33 TV in Dallas, covering high school sports. She also hosted Up All Night, a segment about local nightlife.
In 2008, Candice, who had previously competed in the Miss Texas Teen pageant in 2003 and 2005, was crowned Miss Missouri USA. Besides being a sports journalist and pageant queen, Candice is also an entrepreneur. In 2016, she launched Hawk+Sloane with her middle school best friend, Hollie Siglin. Candice’s older brother, Chace, played 'Nate Archibald' on the hit CW series, Gossip Girl and also features on Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys. Candice’s parents were huge Cowboys fans.
When Tony asked Candice on a date for the first time, she was still living with her parents. Afraid of being embarrassed, Candice made them hide in the bathroom when Tony came to pick her up. Chace is also a fan of the Cowboys. On The Rich Eisen Show, Chace shared how his sister made their parents hide in the bathroom to escape embarrassment. Recalling the moment when Tony came over to take Candice on a date, Chace said:
"My parents, being massive Cowboys fans, she didn't want them in the house. She made my parents hide. She didn't realize Tony was coming over to pick her up … it caught her off guard, so she pushed my parents back in the back ... literally in their master bathroom."
Tony Romo and Candice Crawford's love story
Tony and Candice first met while she was an intern for the Dallas Cowboys. They began dating in 2009. After two years of dating, the couple got married. It was Tony who proposed to Candice in 2010 on her 24th birthday. The duo tied the knot on May 28, 2011, at Arlington Hall, a historic mansion in uptown Dallas.
In a 2012 interview with PEOPLE, Tony shared that he felt incredibly lucky and fortunate to have married Candice. He described her as a great mom and a great wife. He said, "If you get a great wife who understands the demands of someone in athletics, I think that's important. I was lucky enough to find someone like that. She's a great mom and a great wife." The couple welcomed three sons, Hawkins, River and Jones McCoy.
Candice has been very supportive of Tony. In a 2023 interview with PEOPLE, Tony himself admitted the following. He shared that she is his biggest fan and supporter. He also spoke about the sacrifices that Candice made for him. He was quoted as saying:
"When you get married, you know they have stuff in them, and you love them for all the things, and you know that's your person, but even more so now. It's like she's really sacrificed her time for me to be able to live out my dreams, to support me in that and to help me achieve it. And I think that that's a whole other level."
