Veteran NBA referee Tony Brothers has once again landed in controversy following a heated courtside confrontation with Minnesota Timberwolves coach Chris Finch during Game 3 against the San Antonio Spurs.
Video clips from the fiery moment quickly exploded online, finding their way to discussion platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit. Once again, NBA fans are reviving the long-running complaints about Brothers and questioning why the referee hasn't been fired yet. With the recent fallout, many are demanding that he be removed from the remaining games this season.

The confrontation unfolded on Friday, May 8, 2026, during the fourth quarter of the Spurs’ 115-108 playoff win over the Timberwolves at the Western Conference semifinals. With just approximately 5:12 remaining in the high-stakes game, Finch attempted to make a timeout call to reset a possession, but he became furious when Tony Brothers allegedly kept ignoring his request for nearly three seconds. In a game where every millisecond counts, the 3-second delay nearly cost the Timberwolves a turnover.

Things escalated when, instead of walking away, the veteran referee appeared to move toward the Timberwolves coach during the timeout stoppage, his body language aggressive. Before he could reach Finch, the team's players and staff members, including Bones Hyland and assistant coach Pablo Prigioni, had to restrain him.

Brothers' reaction came as a shock to players and fans alike, and Finch addressed the incident during the post-game press conference. The coach called it "completely unprofessional behaviour" on the NBA ref's end and said:

"I wanted the timeout. I had called it 3 seconds earlier, and I wanted the timeout. I said, 'I want my 3 seconds back,' ... because he clearly heard me. He looked my way, ignored me, went on with the play ... almost cost us a turnover. So, and then, you know, he lost it. Then I went to ask him where the ball was going to be taken in, and he screamed at me for that. So, completely unprofessional behavior by him."
Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards also addressed the incident, but his stance was more casual. He simply shrugged off the situation and assured it was "all good", given the high stakes of the tense game, and added that they all loved Tony Brothers. He was quoted as saying:
"It's competition at the highest level. We want to win. Finchy want to win. Tony Brothers is Tony Brothers. We all love him, so it’s all good here."

However, the audience and fans are not taking the matter lightly. Seeing a referee needing to be physically held back from a coach is uncommon, and given Tony's long-standing controversial reputation, NBA fans have gone into meltdown mode on social media.
While he often finds his way back to social media for his meme-worthy, controversial moments, Tony Brothers is actually one of the NBA's most experienced referees, with much demand inside the court. As a veteran referee, Brothers has officiated the league since the 1994-95 season and has worked more than 1,800 regular-season games. To date, he has officiated more than 200 playoff matchups and 19 NBA Finals games.

Tony Brothers' jersey No. 25 has played a vital role in the NBA world. As a long-time official, he has officiated NBA All-Star Games and international events in China and Mexico. Besides his official work, Brothers also owns a restaurant in Norfolk, Virginia, and serves as the Coordinator of Women’s Basketball Officials for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). He is now one of the highest-paid NBA refs, with his annual earnings reportedly exceeding USD 550,000.

Tony Brothers has become something of a meme among NBA fans over the years due to repeated accusations of inconsistent calls, technical fouls, and dramatic on-court exchanges with players and coaches. His name keeps returning on social media, especially during playoff games. Some fans jokingly refer to him as the “main character” during tense games because of how often he becomes part of the storyline.
During Game 2 of the NBA Finals between the Toronto Raptors and Golden State Warriors, Tony Brothers faced heavy backlash from both fans and players over what many felt was excessive foul-calling, especially against Toronto. Critics argued that key Raptors players, including Kyle Lowry, spent most of the game battling foul trouble, ultimately giving the Warriors an edge. Lowry eventually fouled out in the fourth quarter. Former NBA players Kendrick Perkins and Matt Barnes also slammed Brothers online, with Perkins writing, "@NBA no more Tony Brothers for the finals please! This is ridiculous. Nobody came to the game to watch him!"
With his newest heated confrontation, social media has exploded with reactions. As the video circulated online, many users noted that referees should never appear more emotional than the players or coaches involved. When referees are ones who generally separate players and coaches during heated moments, Tony Brothers' unexpected body language has thrown many off guard, but others are here to enjoy the drama. A now-viral comment on Reddit reads:
"Tony Brothers shouldn't be allowed to ref another game these playoffs...He tried to force a physical altercation with a coach, which is levels worse than how a ref should be expected to behave. Totally unprofessional. I've never seen anything like that before."

Given Tony Brothers' already controversial reputation in the NBA, his confrontation has added to popular criticisms against him. The veteran NBA ref has yet to publicly comment on the incident.
