According to reports, Matt graduated from the United States Naval Academy. Eventually, he began pursuing an MBA at Harvard Business School. Despite being the life partner of one of America's most well-known television journalists, Matt has maintained a relatively private lifestyle. Still, he has always been supportive of Sharyn's hectic journalism career. The couple reportedly shares two children. They have a son, Wyatt, and a daughter, Flynn. Earlier, in an interview with The New York Times, Matt jokingly revealed that Sharyn mostly controls the interior of their home. Gradually, they bonded over shared interests, adventurous lifestyle, and strong family values. The relationship became serious when Sharyn's career began to grow, and she became a household name with her investigative reporting.

They initially lived in New York City to support Sharyn's growing career at CBS News and 60 Minutes. In fact, she once sat down for an interview with Meek School Magazine and joked about her fast lifestyle in Manhattan. She revealed that the first word her son, Wyatt, ever spoke was "Taxi". Sharyn Alfonsi has made headlines after a major public fallout with CBS News leadership. According to reports, the network has decided not to renew her contract for 60 Minutes. The decision was made after tensions increased between the parties over her controversial report on difficult prison conditions in El Salvador. It began when a segment by Sharyn about Venezuelan men deported to El Salvador's CECOT prison was suddenly taken off air in 2025. 

As CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss mentioned, the segment was ready for broadcast. In fact, it needed more interviews and political seamless. However, the journalist disagreed and sent and allegedly email calling the incident "political" to her colleagues. Now, Sharyn claims that the headship allowed her contract to expire without clear communication.

"It sends a chilling message to the entire newsroom. I think it was a deliberate choice to penalize a journalist for refusing to sanitize accurate reporting. I'm not resigning. If they want me gone because I did my job, they'll have to fire me."
