She revealed she found out about it about a year after filming opposite Andrew Garfield.
Recalling that time in a recent interview, Shailene sarcastically said, “That was a fun phone call.” According to Shailene, ‘Mary Jane’ was one of her favorite characters while growing up, and she had been super excited to play her before her scenes got cut. While she did not get to play ‘Spider-Man's' love interest, Shailene had no shortage of romances in real life.

According to reports, Shailene Woodley's ex-boyfriend, Ben Volavola, was born on January 13, 1991, in Sydney, Australia, to parents Dinesh Shankar and Ema Volavola. Ben moved to Fiji when he was just one year old and lived there with his mom and younger brother, Milan. He returned to his hometown after turning eight.
Ben reportedly earned his Certificate III and IV in fitness at the Australian Institute of Fitness. He then went on to get a business diploma from the Australian Vocational Training Academy. Turning his interest in fitness into a career, Ben began playing professional rugby as part of the Waratahs Extended Playing Squad. In 2014, his team won Super Rugby.
The very next year, in 2015, Ben Volavola got the opportunity to represent Fiji in the Rugby World Cup. In 2017, he signed with the French team Bordeaux Bègles. Ben’s time with the team was cut short as they terminated his contract after only one year. During an interview, he admitted that he “wasn't good enough” at that time, adding:
“I didn’t succeed [in] what I wanted to accomplish with them. I wasn’t good enough, and the club decided to release me before the end of my contract.”
Since then, Ben has played for teams like Racing 92, Agen, the Crusaders, Perpignan, and more. He currently plays for the Queensland Reds in the Super Rugby Pacific competition.
Coming to Ben Volavola’s relationship with Shailene Woodley, the duo reportedly crossed paths in 2017. At that time, Ben was playing in the Pacific Nations Cup while the actress was filming for Adrift. In a 2019 interview, Ben opened up about their relationship. He said that he was blessed to have met a girl like Shailene, especially since she had never watched much sports before. He stated:
“I’m blessed to have met a girl like her. Before me, she had never watched sports on TV. Since then, she has started to learn the rules of rugby. She even comes to see us at the Arena.”
Why did Ben Volavola and Shailene Woodley break up?
Ben Volavola and Shailene Woodley's relationship did not last long, as the couple broke up in 2020. During an interview with Bustle, the actress had confessed that she was “very much on the road to marriage and children” with the rugby star.
However, Shailene claimed that the reason they ultimately decided to split was that she realized she was “still at an age where I wasn't able to commit. I couldn't be available to him in the way that I wanted to be. I didn't fully love myself.”
For those unaware, it seems that Ben has already moved on from Shailene. At present, he is happily married to Kristine Phipps. The duo also share a son together.
