Tollywood star, Ram Charan might be back with yet another blockbuster. His latest movie, Peddi, which was released on June 4, 2026, has created a storm at the global box office. According to the latest reports, the movie secured over Rs. 100 crore first-day worldwide gross, and crossing Rs. 50 crores in sales in India. Thus, Buchi Babu Sana's sports drama can be said to have made a phenomenal debut, surpassing even Shah Rukh Khan's Pathaan's opening day collection. Regarding Peddi, it is a biographical film featuring Ram Charan, Janhvi Kapoor, Shiva Rajkumar, Jagapathi Babu, Boman Irani, and Divyenndu as the primary cast.
Speaking of Peddi's plotline, the Telugu sports action drama focuses on a multi-talented athlete who utilises his expertise in sports to fight for identity, dignity, and legal recognition of his forgotten village. It is set in the 1980s in a remote, marginalised tribal village called Kondakinda Ooru, located in the Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh. They are completely barred from basic rights like official government records and voting rights. Amid that, rises athlete Peddi, who vows to win competitive athletics to bring visibility to the village.
The real-life inspiration behind Ram Charan's titular character in the movie, Peddi is a young man named Peddi Raju. He was a local boy who reportedly hailed from the hometown of the film's director, Buchi Babu Sana. He belonged to a financially disadvantaged family and worked as a daily-wage labourer at local construction sites to support them. Besides being a wageworker, Peddi Raju had another side to him. He possessed exceptional natural, untrained talent in sports like cricket and basketball. According to the director, Peddi Raju could single-handedly win matches, and the locals would often pay him to skip his manual labour jobs so that he could play for their village teams.
The movie, Peddi focused on Peddi Raju's undaunted spirit and dedication towards sports despite suffering major setbacks. Director Buchi Babu Sana moulded the real-life story into a larger-than-life version to make it enjoyable on the big screen. Coming back to Peddi Raju's story, the cricket enthusiast later switched to professional wrestling after being offered the opportunity by a veteran mentor. He seized the opportunity to elevate his community's status.
Buchi Babu Sana felt that Peddi Raju, who earned the title 'Peddi Pehelwan' due to his wrestling prowess, was an inspiring figure. According to him, Peddi had almost a "cinematic" life, and the story of a man like that needs to be amplified. He recalled Peddi as his village's pride, with people paying him to play in matches by skipping his daily-wage job. They wanted Peddi's talent to help their village gain recognition, which ultimately happened. Although Bucchi followed Peddi's journey as the film's main plot, he admitted that some parts of it are fictionalised. Sharing the story of his becoming the movie's foundation, the director stated:
"He used to win matches single-handedly. I felt his personality and journey had the potential for a powerful cinematic character. That thought eventually became the foundation for the story of Peddi."

Buchi Babu Sana (who was Sukumar's chief associate director on Rangasthalam) revealed that while he was drafting the script for Peddi, Sukumar, in temples and while driving around Hyderabad, constantly pushed him to trust his gut and write the story exactly as he envisioned it, according to The Times of India. After Buchi finished the script, he first narrated it to Sukumar. The actor was so impressed that he immediately got standard channels to arrange a direct meeting with Ram Charan, who approved the script in a single sitting. Beyond moral support, Sukumar co-produced the movie under Sukumar Writings and actwe as the creative supervisor.
