All about Sandy Brondello's WNBA suspension

Sandy Brondello

Sandy Brondello has come under the scanner after Toronto Tempo's latest game against the Atlanta Dream. After Sandy got frustrated with the officiating following Nyara Sabally's injury, she was heard on a hot mic saying, "Angel, she's a protected species," referring to Angel Reese. Needless to say, these comments soon drew criticism from fans and members of the basketball fraternity.

In turn, Angel Reese reacted to the clip on social media by commenting, "Are we surprised?" with a clown emoji. Some critics also mentioned that the phrase carried harmful racial undertones and called for disciplinary action. Later, Sandy issued a public apology and claimed that she used an Australian sporting expression to suggest that a player got favourable officiating.

But she admitted that her words caused major harm and apologised for it. In particular, she apologised to Black women in the league. Meanwhile, South Carolina women's basketball coach Dawn Staley explained that it was a "real apology".

However, after a review, the WNBA suspended Sandy for one game without pay. So, she will miss the Toronto Tempo's upcoming home game against the Las Vegas Aces. Although her comment became a major point of discussion, Sandy's apology and the league's response have focused on accountability.
