Former U.S. Air Force officer, Monica Witt is back in the news after the FBI renewed her global search after more than a decade. Incidentally, the search has restarted after a long time, after she allegedly fled to Iran. In fact, the agency recently announced a USD 200,000 reward for details leading to her arrest. The significant decision was taken after investigators believed she still poses a major national security threat. In turn, the search has become even more important amid the rising tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.

Monica Witt is a former Air Force counterintelligence officer and cryptologic language analyst. She served in the U.S. military after joining in 1997. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, she worked in some highly sensitive intelligence roles related to Middle Eastern operations. At the same time, she was a Farsi-language specialist during her career in the U.S. Eventually, between 2003 and 2008, she reportedly worked with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations and held top-secret security clearance.
The former FBI officer's position allegedly gave her access to sensitive information to uncover identities and intelligence-gathering techniques. After completing her service in the Air Force in 2008, Monica later worked as a Defense Department contractor until 2008. According to prosecutors, she gradually became a critic of the United States and later converted to Islam. In fact, there was a visible shift in her ideological views against the U.S. government.

Later, the federal prosecutor revealed that Monica traveled to Iran in 2012 to attend a conference promoting anti-American messaging. In turn, officials mentioned that the trip became a turning point in her bond with Iranian intelligence operatives. Next year, she fled to Iran. Authorities believe that Iranian officials gave her housing, equipment, and support. Since then, U.S. authorities have been trying to find and arrest her.

Previously, in 2019, federal prosecutors formally charged Monica Witt with espionage-related crimes. She was also accused of sharing sensitive national defense information with the Iranian government. At the same time, they alleged that Monica worked directly with one of the most powerful military organizations of Iran, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). On the other hand, the Justice Department shared that she might have shared some significant details related to a sensitive Pentagon intelligence collection.
Investigators also believe she has helped the Iranian intelligence officials to find and target her former colleagues in the U.S. In fact, prosecutors claimed that she had personal details and intelligence that was later used in cyberattack operations against U.S. personnel. She even appeared in some Iranian propaganda broadcasts and called the U.S. while supporting the Iranian state's messaging. For now, they believe she could be under Iran's state protection.
According to the latest FBI announcement, the U.S. government considers Monica an active security threat. FBI Special Agent, Daniel Wierzbicki shared that the investigators have "not forgotten" the case. In turn, they have renewed the effort in what they call a "critical moment in Iran's history" during growing military tensions with Tehran, Iran. Since Iran does not extradite citizens to the U.S, experts believe that Monica can only be arrested when she travels to another country with a U.S. extradition agreement. Therefore, they hope that the new USD 200,000 reward could encourage people to share updates about her.
