Who Is 'Meet The Press' Host, Kristen Welker's Husband, John Hughes? Marketing Executive, Dad Of Two

Kristen Welker is a well-known American television journalist who works for NBC News. She serves as a White House correspondent and previously co-anchored Weekday Today, the Saturday edition of Today, from 2020 to 2023. 

Kristen Welker is also the host of the longest-running program in American television history called Meet the Press. At present, she is hogging the spotlight after US President Donald Trump stormed out of the interview during the show. John Hughes is a marketing executive at a pharmaceutical company

According to reports, when Kristen Walker and John Hughes tied the knot in 2017, the latter was a marketing director at Merck, a pharmaceutical company. At the time, he was reportedly based in Philadelphia. While it is unclear whether John is still working on marketing or not, he did joke to People in August 2020 that he might pursue a career as a producer. For those unaware, during the COVID-19 pandemic, John helped Kristen film her NBC segment and even learned how to “run a mean teleprompter.” Noting the same, Kristen said:

“He's just so supportive, and jumps right in. We joke that he'll be joining the union soon, because he knows how to use all of the equipment.”

Before Kristen had met her husband, John Hughes, she admitted in a 2017 interview that she had come to terms with the fact that marriage might not happen to her as she was already in her late 30s. However, after she met John in October 2014, her views on the matter finally changed. Apparently, when John arrived for their first date in Philadelphia, he was overwhelmed to see just how put-together Kristen was.

He remembered thinking to himself that if he could make her laugh, he could have a chance with her. Reportedly, Kristen had almost missed her second date with John, showing up more than two hours late because she had to cover a breaking news story. Instead of being phased by this, John gave her a special and handmade gift: a crossword puzzle of presidential trivia with clues that he had written himself. Kristen said:

“That's the moment he got me. As a White House correspondent, it was so touching, and it marked him different than anyone else I ever dated.” 

John Hughes had proposed to Kristen Welker in front of the Lincoln Memorial 

Wanting his proposal to be really special for Kristen, John Hughes carefully planned to get down on his knee within the 24 hours that they had together in Washington, D.C., between campaign stops. At the time, since they had been planning to move on together, the duo went to a real estate open house, following which John directed their cab driver to the Lincoln Memorial before their dinner reservation. John told the New York Times, “I wanted to ask her outside in a place you could walk by years later and tell your kids that this was the spot we got engaged.” Once John and Kristen got outside, he quickly proposed to her. Although even before he could finish asking the question, Kristen screamed and said, “Yes!”

John Hughes and Kristen Welker got married in Philadelphia 

John Hughes and Kristen Welker tied the knot on March 4, 2017, at The Hyatt at the Bellevue Hotel in Philadelphia. They were joined by their friends and family on their special day, including the children of the bridesmaids who accompanied Kristen down the aisle. On her wedding day, Kristen chose to wear a Vera Wang dress while her husband, John Hughes, sported a Michael Kors tuxedo. The couple enjoyed their first dance to Etta James' At Last. 

John Hughes and Kristen Welker welcomed their daughter via surrogate 

If reports are believed to be true, John Hughes and Kristen Welker had struggled to conceive a child for three years. This prompted them to do down the part of surrogacy. During a conversation with People in September 2021, Kristen said:

"I consulted with four different doctors. The lowest moment was when that fourth doctor called me and said, 'We've run all the tests. We've looked at everything. We just don't think that you are going to be able to carry a child.' I thought, 'How is this ever going to happen?'"

Despite feeling low, Kristen and John did not give up so easily. And in 2019, they finally matched with a surrogate. Over two years later, Kristen and John welcomed their daughter, Margot Lane, on June 12, 2021. 

John Hughes and Kristen Welker welcomed their son in May 2024

For their second child, John and Kristen once again chose surrogacy, with the help of which they welcomed their son, John Zachary Welker Hughes, on May 30, 2024. Ahead of his birth, the journalist spoke with People about Margot becoming a big sister. She revealed that Margot had been telling her classmates that her parents were getting her a baby brother for her birthday. She said, “She's very proud of the fact that her baby brother will be sleeping in her old crib, and she's even come up with a name for him: ‘Lolo.’”
