Kathleen Kennedy Leaves Star Wars And Lucasfilm After 14 Years, All About Her Family And Net Worth

After almost 14 years as Lucasfilm President, Kathleen Kennedy had made a tough call. After a striking reign at the helm, she announced that she would be stepping down this week. While the move was not a surprise to many, it will mark a major change of the guard at the Walt Disney Co-owned, Star Wars studio. According to reports, Kathleen Kennedy announced the decision to step away after January 15, 2026 (ET).

In her place, Lucasfilm Chief Creative Officer, Dave Filoni has been named president. Dave will retain his creative title, and Lucasfilm Business President and General Manager, Lynwen Brennan, has been named co-president of Disney. The pair will co-lead the San Francisco-based studio and will report to Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman, Alan Bergman. So, as Kathleen's esteemed run comes to an end, let's take a look at her journey and her life beyond the studios.

Kathleen Kennedy's early life and family

Kathleen Kennedy was born on June 5, 1953, in Berkeley, California, to Donald R. Kennedy and Dione 'Dede' Marie. While her father was a judge and attorney, Kathleen's mother 'Dede' was a one-time theatre actress. She has two sisters. Her twin sister, Connie and their younger sister, Dana Middleton-Silberstein. Connie is the executive producer at the Virtual Production company Profile Studios, while Dana is a television host and anchor.

Kathleen Kennedy graduated from Shasta High School in Redding, California, in 1971. After which she continued her education at San Diego State University, where she majored in telecommunications and film. In her final year at the State University, Kennedy secured a role at a local San Diego TV station, KCST (now KNSD), working in various roles, including camera operator, video editor, and floor director, before ultimately landing the position of news production coordinator.

Kathleen Kennedy's initial years in the media world

After her stint at KCST, Kathleen Kennedy produced the local talk show, You're On, for four years before moving to Los Angeles. There, she landed her first film production job and served as John's assistant on the 1979 war comedy film 1941. While working as John Milius's assistant on the film, Kathleen caught the attention of Steven Spielberg, who, in 2015, recalled that she was "horrible at taking notes, but what she did know how to do was interrupt somebody in mid-sentence."

Kathleen Kennedy's rise in the production world

Impressed by Kathleen Kennedy's skills, Steven asked her to serve as his secretary, beginning her long career in the entertainment industry. Over the next few years, she gradually worked her way into larger roles in the filmmaking process, finally earning her first credit as an associate on Steven Spielberg's Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981. She finally began to receive producer credit with Steven on the major box-office hit E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Thereafter, she became a permanent presence in production roles on Steven's films for the next three decades.

In 1982, Kathleen Kennedy co-founded the production company Amblin Entertainment with Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshall. Over the years, she produced several big projects, including Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Back to the Future. In 1991, she changed tracks again, forming a production company, The Kennedy/Marshall Company, with Frank, and produced works like Jurassic Park (1993) and Ward of the Worlds. She also produced Steven's 2012 drama film, Lincoln, which was nominated for seven Golden Globes and twelve Academy Awards.

Kathleen Kennedy's stint with Lucasfilm Ltd.

In 2012, Kathleen Kennedy left The Kennedy/Marshall Company, leaving Marshall as head of their film house. She played a key role in revitalising Star Wars, overseeing the sequel trilogy and expanding it into series such as The Mandalorian and Andor.

Despite the series's success, her future at Lucasfilm was always questioned. Especially after the company lost money at the box office with Solo: A Star Wars Story. After that, rumours began circulating that management planned to replace her. However, whether that led to her resignation in 2026 remains unclear.

Kathleen Kennedy's life beyond the production work has remained highly under wraps. However, everyone knows that the producer is married to her fellow producer, Frank Marshall, with whom she also owns The Kennedy/Marshall Company. The duo married in 1987, years before they founded the film company. While the details of their romance are not well known, it's believed they bonded over their professional partnership and eventually formed a personal relationship. The couple has two daughters, Lili Marshall and Meghan Eva Marshall.
