Who Is Hilary Duff's Husband? Meet Matthew Koma As Lizzie McGuire Actress Fears He Will Leave Her

Hilary Duff is one of the most beloved American actresses and singers. Her acting career began at a young age in the '90s, where she mostly played minor roles. It wasn't until the early 2000s that Hilary found mainstream success after being cast in the Disney Channel comedy series, Lizzie McGuire. Some of her most notable projects after her stint on Lizzie McGuire include Cadet Kelly (2002), Agent Cody Banks (2003), A Cinderella Story (2004), Younger (2015-2021), and How I Met Your Father (2022-2023).  

Recently, Hilary Duff made a shocking admission about her personal life. Matthew Koma developed a passion for music since he was born in New York  

Hilary Duff's husband, Matthew Koma, was born in Brooklyn, New York City. He spent most of his childhood years in Seaford, Long Island. During a July 2024 interview with Alternative Press, Koma explained that living close to New York City helped him develop a passion for music since he was a young boy. He said that this was because he was in very close proximity to see all levels of concerts, from big stadium shows to just going to clubs.  

After he was exposed to the culture, he thought this was normal and that everybody did it. Previously, in a November 27 interview with Billboard, he had noted that one of the major plus points of growing up in Long Island was that it has “really good bagels.” 

Matthew Koma was only 9 years old when he wrote his first song 

If reports are believed to be true, Matthew Koma is a big fan of singer-songwriters like Elvis Costello, Carole King, and Bruce Springsteen. Being their fan and his huge love for music eventually led him to become a songwriter himself. A Billboard report suggests that Koma wrote his first song at 9, titled Downtown.  

It is no surprise that Matthew Koma pursued a career in music, especially since talent runs in his family, with his dad, Gerald Blair, being a well-known musician. In a September 2012 interview with USA TODAY, Koma recalled his first experience being onstage with his father:  

"Music was always a huge part of our lives. The first time I got onstage, it was with him. I was 4. I wore ripped jeans and a dungaree jacket. I was going through my Soul Asylum phase." 

Matthew Koma is the lead singer of an indie band 

Many might not know, but Hilary Duff's husband, Matthew Koma, is the lead singer of the indie pop group Winnetka Bowling League. Apparently, he formed the band alongside his brother, drummer, Kris Mazzarisi, back in 2018. Since the band's formation, they have released a handful of well-received EPs and formally debuted their full-length album, Sha La La, in 2024. 

Before he became the frontman of Winnetka Bowling League, Matthew Koma had already made a name for himself as a solo artist. He landed his first publishing deal, as per his AllMusic bio, at the age of 16. Later, after catching the eye of producer, Jimmy Iovine, he signed with Interscope Records. This became a major turning point in his music career as he went on to tour with Ellie Goulding, Owl City, and LMFAO. Koma has also played in big festivals like Coachella and Ultra. 

Matthew Koma was previously in a relationship with singer, Carly Rae Jepsen 

Being in the music industry, it comes as no surprise that Matthew Koma has dated a musician or two. Before he got into a relationship with his now-wife, Hilary Duff, according to Harper's Bazaar, Koma dated Call Me Maybe singer, Carley Rae Jepsen. Their relationship began in 2012 after the duo collaborated on her album, Kiss.  

Some of the songs they co-wrote include This Kiss, Take a Picture, and Almost Said It. While they kept things professional in the studio, for as long as they dated, they made an effort to see each other at least once a week. According to Elle, Koma and Jepsen kept their relationship out of the spotlight and later parted ways in 2015.

For the unversed, Matthew Koma and Hilary Duff crossed paths for the first time while working on the latter's fifth studio album, Breathe In. Breathe Out. On the 2015 album, Koma co-wrote the title track, as well as two other songs, Arms Around a Memory and Confetti. It is worth noting that at the time, Hilary Duff was separated from her then-husband, professional hockey player, Mike Comrie.  

Matthew Koma and Hilary Duff made things official two years after their first encounter, in 2017. Interestingly, in a 2018 interview with People, the actress revealed that they were in an on-and-off relationship. In fact, the pair tried three times before they decided to settle down. They went on to tie the knot in December 2019, just a few days before Christmas. During their marriage, Koma and Hilary Duff have welcomed three children together — Banks Violet Bair, Mae James Bair, and Townes Meadow Bair.
