As a titular character, she has been a part of the show since it premiered over a decade ago in 2005. This is why fans were surprised to see that Ellen did not appear alongside the other members of the upcoming Season 23 cast in a new picture. Amid the buzz, the focus has shifted to Ellen’s personal life, especially her husband, Chris Ivery.
Who is Ellen Pompeo’s husband, Chris Ivery?
According to reports, Ellen Pompeo and her husband, Chris Ivery, both have Boston roots. During a 2006 interview, Ellen shared that they had grown up just a few minutes apart in Boston, and this is why she thought that was meant to be. During her Call Her Daddy appearance in 2025, the actress also told host Alex Cooper that her and Chris’ shared Boston upbringing was something that brought them closer together. She explained:
“I think that what's funny about Chris and I, because we come from the same place, we're sort of two kids who made it out and then landed in Hollywood and jumped on this ride. We just couldn't believe that something was actually happening - that it was great, that I had this great job and we were getting to travel all over the world."
At present, Chris works at Sergio Tacchini, a heritage athletics brand that was founded in 1996 by the tennis champion. He began working for the brand in 2019 and currently holds the role of Chief Executive for Lifestyle Marketing. Interestingly, before Chris began working in fashion, he used to work in the music industry and has even been credited as a writer on Rihanna’s song, Cheers (Drink to That).

Coming to Chris and Ellen's relationship, the couple first crossed paths in 2003 at a grocery store in Los Angeles. They remained just friends for the first six months, but according to Chris, “one night she just looked different to me.”
Later, during her appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show in 2022, Ellen explained that their first meeting at the grocery store was not “some big romance that happened over crackers and cheese in the aisle.” Recalling how Chris tried to call her a few times after their initial encounter, she admitted that she never called him back. She added:
"Then he said, 'You're rude. You won't call me back.' And I said, 'Well, because I'm not trying to go on a date with you.' And he said, 'Who’s trying to go on a date with you? I don't even know you.’ So we had a fight first, and ... that's kind of always the way to my heart is like piss me off and I'm all yours."
Eventually, after three years of dating, Chris proposed to the actress in 2006 on her 37th birthday. They tied the knot about a year later at a private ceremony at City Hall in Lower Manhattan. At the time, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg had served as their witness.
Over the years, Chris and Ellen have welcomed three children together. Their oldest child, Stella Luna, was born in 2009, followed by Sienna May in 2014, and Eli Christopher in 2016.

Chris is one of the biggest supporters of Ellen’s acting career. Despite this, as per reports, he had not seen Grey’s Anatomy due to her intimate scenes in the series. Ellen revealed the same during her appearance on the Ladies First with Laura Brown podcast in 2021. She said:
"I remember in the beginning it was really hard for him. He was like, 'This is not what I signed up for. You go to work and make out with that. I like Patrick [Dempsey] and everything; he's a good dude, but like really?'"
