Dayton James Webber, a well-known figure in professional cornhole, is currently dominating national headlines for a shocking reason. The Maryland athlete, who rose to prominence as a quadruple amputee competing at the highest level of cornhole, is now facing serious criminal charges in connection with the murder of a 27-year-old, whose body was found on the side of the road in Charlotte Hall, Maryland.

Webber, 27, was accused of shooting the victim while inside a car, after which he allegedly drove off and dumped the body along Newport Church Road before fleeing the scene. The victim has been identified as Bradrick Michael Wells, a resident of Waldorf, who allegedly knew the cornhole athlete. The news has spread like wildfire across the nation, with fans wondering how a man with no arms and legs could perform such a heinous crime. What are the allegations against Dayton Webber?

According to reports by the Charles County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), Webber was charged with fatally shooting the victim, Bradrick Michael Wells, 27, on Sunday night, March 22, 2026. The shooting happened during what investigators decribe as a dispute inside a vehicle in La Plata, Maryland. Two witnesses who reportedly flagged down the police near the La Plata Road and Radio Station Road described the incident.

The witnesses were reportedly seated in the back of the car when the altercation happened. Webber was allegedly driving the car and Bradrick Michael Wells was seated by him on the front passenger seat. They had an argument around 10:30 p.m., which escalated to the point that Webber allegedly fired a gun at Wells, and the gunshot wound proved fatal.

Following the shooting, the 27-year-old cornhole athlete allegedly pulled the vehicle over and asked the witnesses to help get rid of the victim's body, which they reportedly refused. The witnesses exited the car, leaving Webber alone with the body, and he allegedly drove away with Wells still inside. Hours later, a body was dicovered in a nearby yard along Newport Church Road, and was identified as Wells. 

On Monday, March 23, 2026, the police tracked Webber down, tracing his footsteps to Virgina, where the pro cornhole player was seeking treatment at a local hospital, though the medical issue hasn't been specified. He was arrested after his hospital visit. Southern Maryland News Net reported that the vehicle involved in the crime was a white Tesla and also shared a 2024 video that allegedly shows Webber handling and reloading a pistol.

Currently, Dayton Webber is facing charges of a first-degree and a second-degree murder, along with other related charges regarding an alleged road rage shooting. He is being held by Viginia authorities as he awaits extradition. A CCSO spokesperson told PEOPLE that he is very much capable of handling a firearm, having previously shot a "9 mm handgun". He said:

"Upon being released from the hospital, Webber was arrested by officers with the Albemarle County Police Department and was charged as a fugitive from justice. He's got great capabilities and abilities."

Dayton Webber got into playing cornhole professionally as an adult, but his journey to fame has been anything but easy. He went on to defy expectations, learning to do no only basic tasks but also pursuing athletic endeavours. Speaking about his journey to becoming a professional cornhole player, Webber said in the essay:

"I learned how to do things, such as writing, on my own. I even taught myself how to drive by racing go-karts. Teaching myself how to do various tasks — such as writing, picking things off the floor and even driving — helps me with cornhole, too."

Over the years, Webber became one of the most recognisable players in the American Cornhole League, even competing professionally and appearing in televised events. His journey, from surviving a critical illness to becoming a pro athlete, earned him admiration within the cornhole community and beyond. From playing with the American Cornhole League and winning state-level titles before turning pro, to appearing in ESPN and other major broadcasts, Webber become a well-known symbol of strength, will, and perseverance. However, the once admired face has now become the subject heated criticism following his recent charges.

Where the case stands now

Following his arrest in Virginia, Webber has been charged as a fugitive from justice and is expected to be transferred to Maryland, where formal charges will proceed. Authorities have stated that the investigation is ongoing, and additional details may emerge as the case develops.
