Breaking Amish fame, Jeremiah Raber, is recovering after he faced a serious medical emergency that landed him in the hospital. He had recently shared a selfie from his hospital bed on TikTok to reveal that he was waiting to be airlifted to another medical facility after his sugar level reached a dangerous level of 993. Additionally, he added that the doctors were monitoring him for a possible liver failure. Again, on January 2, Jeremiah updated the updates about his well-being and upcoming discharge. Meanwhile, after the shocking news of his health scare, netizens were keen to know about his ex-wife, Carmela Mendez, and what led to their split.

Who is Carmela Mendez? 

Carmela Mendez tied the knot with Jeremiah in 2016, and their wedding ceremony was featured on TLC's Return to Amish. She originally hails from Vancouver, Washington. During her stint on the show, she revealed that she grew up in a strict religious family. Carmela often compared her upbringing to the Amish lifestyle that Jeremiah had changed over time. 

She has three kids from her previous relationship before Jeremiah. However, not much is known about her professional life. On the other hand, her turbulent relationship with Jeremiah quickly became one of the most talked-about storylines on the show, marked by their repeated conflicts both on and off camera. 

Why did Jeremiah Raber and Carmela Mandez file for a divorce? 

After Jeremiah Raber and Carmela Mendez's marriage, the couple made headlines in a few months when Jeremiah was arrested in April 2017 on the charges of domestic violence levelled by Carmela. She alleged in the official records that the incident was not new, but had been ongoing for years. However, the charges were later dropped in July 2018 after Jeremiah completed a pretrial diversion program. He denied the allegations and claimed that Carmela was grabbing attention with the case. On the other hand, Carmela accused him of manipulation and abuse in her social media posts.

The couple had initially reconciled after the incident, but things turned sour again. In March 2022, Carmela filed for a restraining order and alleged that Jeremiah threatened her life. However, the order expired in March 2023, and the Breaking Amish star denied the claims, clarifying that the allegations referred to incidents from 2017 and insisting that he had changed.  

Are Jeremiah and Carmela still together?

No, Jeremiah Raber confirmed in May 2022 that he and Carmela are no longer together, calling their relationship "officially done." The following Return to Amish's next season ootage later suggested that the couple had attempted to reconcile and discussed having a baby. However, those scenes were reportedly filmed before they finally parted ways for good. Until early 2026, Jeremiah is reportedly living alone and travelling in a camper van after the end of his marriage. Notably, he was previously married to Naomi Stutzman from 2005 to 2011 and shares three children with her. 

Jeremiah Raber faced a possible 'liver failure' situatio

Towards the end of December 2025, Jeremiah shocked everyone after he revealed that his blood sugar had risen to a dangerously low level of 993, and he was facing the situation of a possible liver failure. Although the star's doing well now, it is not the first serious medical emergency for Jeremiah. Back in April 2024, he was hospitalised for a heart ailment and diabetic ketoacidosis, a life-threatening complication of diabetes. Consequently, his latest hospitalisation appears to be related to his ongoing diabetes complications. However, at the end, he assured fans that he was improving and expected to return home shortly.
