For those unaware, the actor lost his longtime Pacific Palisades home in the January 2025 wildfires. Soon after this, he lost his close friend Rob Reiner. The two incidents have not only shaken up Billy’s faith but also led him to think that the Earth is in bad shape and that this is a weird and scary time.
Despite this, Billy admitted that he highly ‘leaned on' his family to get through this tough period. This includes his wife, Janice Crystal, to whom he has been married for 56 years.
Meet Billy Crystal’s wife, Janice Crystal
According to reports, Billy Crystal’s wife, Janice Crystal, is involved in show business and has experience working as a producer and actor. In her younger days, she served as an assistant to the dean of theatre at a junior college on Long Island. Janice has also worked on projects related to her husband, including serving as a producer on Billy Crystal: 700 Sundays in 2014. It earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Variety Special. Janice later starred in a movie helmed by Billy titled Here Today.
Janice’s relationship with Billy Crystal dates way back. The duo first met in their teens while living in Long Beach, New York. Billy graduated from Long Beach High School in 1965, following which he attended Marshall University in West Virginia. It was at a summer camp where he got a job before his sophomore year that he crossed paths with Janice.
Recalling the first time he saw her, Billy said on the WTF with Marc Maron podcast, “This girl walks by…and I said, ‘I’m gonna marry her.’ And I did, four years later.” Meeting Janice eventually became one of the key reasons that Billy decided to stay in New York. He said:
“I loved her so much right away. You know, I don’t know if you’ve ever been in a long-distance relationship — they don’t work out."
Billy Crystal and Janice tied the knot on June 4, 1970. In an interview on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Billy revealed the secret behind how they manage to keep the spark alive in their relationship after so many years together. He said that they love being together. He added:
“We just have so much fun and keep discovering new things about each other. And I think that’s the most important thing is to still always be curious and find out more about each other.”
Billy Crystal also claimed that he strove to replicate his parents' relationship with Janice. According to him, his parents always looked like they loved being together. He said that that's how he and Janice are, and he still feels like they are dating.
In an October 2024 interview, Billy said that he attributes respect, humor, and honesty to his successful marriage. He advised that one should always enjoy all the time they have together with their partner, “through the thin and the thinner.”
The couple shares two children. Their first child, a daughter named Jennifer Crystal Foley, was born on January 26, 1973. Billy and Janice welcomed their second child, a daughter named Lindsay Crystal, on October 21, 1977.
Janice is Billy Crystal’s biggest supporter
Janice has always been Billy’s biggest supporter. The actor revealed that he had been working at his old high school while waiting for his big break. He said it was thanks to Janice that he was able to stop teaching and begin pursuing comedy full-time at an early stage in his career. He said:
“It was the greatest gift of her selflessness as a young mother with a 6-month-old, to trust me."
