The mysterious graffiti artist, Banksy has been well-known in the art world for many years. Banksy rose to fame for his impeccable artwork. However, his identity always remained a mystery, as he preferred to be known by his art rather than his face. That was until an investigation by Reuters concluded that the artist is a 51-year-old British man named Robin Gunningham. However, the investigation revealed that Robin had changed his name to David Jones in 2008.
Banksy has been one of the most well-known street artists. While the artist has never officially confirmed his identity, reports have now started circulating, raising questions about it. So, how true is the report? Let's take a look.

The buzz around Banksy's identity began when a Reuters report surfaced online, claiming to have revealed it. The report included a handwritten confession the artist wrote years ago after he faced charges of disorderly conduct. According to reports, Banksy was arrested in New York in 2000 during Fashion Week. At the time, he became intrigued with billboards for designer Marc Jacobs, which featured the slogan "Boys Love Marc Jacobs".

Further photographer, Steve Lazarides said Banksy climbed the roof of a New York apartment and "doctored the Marc Jacobs Men billboard so that the model had goofy teeth." Banksy was later charged with misdemeanour and had to pay USD 310. According to a Reuters report, court documents from the arrest revealed that the artist's real name was Robin Gunningham. The investigation also added that reporters gathered information from Banksy's time in Ukraine during the war to reveal his identity.

Banksy is an England-based street artist, political activist and film director. The artist has been active since the 1990s, leaving his satirical street art and subversive epigrams that combine dark humour with graffiti across England's landscape. His distinctive stencil became his signature, and his work of political and social commentary has since appeared on streets, walls and bridges throughout the world. His work grew out of the Bristol underground scene through collaborations with musicians and other artists. Banksy revealed that he was inspired by 3D, a graffiti artist and founding member of Massive Attack.

Banksy's lawyer, Mark Stephens, didn't confirm the accuracy of the claims made by Reuters in their report. However, when the publication reached out to Mark with questions, he responded, "Banksy does not accept that many of the details contained within your enquiry are correct." He further shared it was important for Banksy to remain anonymous because he has "been subjected to fixated, threatening and extremist behaviour" for his controversial work, which often reflects social justice efforts. He further stated:
"[Working] anonymously or under a pseudonym serves vital societal interests. It protects freedom of expression by allowing creators to speak truth to power without fear of retaliation, censorship or persecution—particularly when addressing sensitive issues such as politics, religion or social justice."

Banksy's former manager, Steve Lazaides, also reflected on Reuters' claims. He revealed that there was no "Robin Gunningham". The former manager didn't confirm Banksy was Robin, but he said the artist changed his name in 2008 when the two split. Concluding his statement on the matter, Steve asserted that the world would never find out who Banksy was.
No one has been able to confirm Banksy's identity in the decades he has been active. However, before the 2026 Reuters report, it was a 2003 report by Simon Hattenstone of The Guardian that claimed that Banksy was "white, 28, scruffy casual: jeans, T-shirt, a silver tooth, silver chain and silver earring. He looks like a cross between Jimmy Nail and Mike Skinner of The Streets." The Mail on Sunday claimed in 2008 that Banksy was Robin Hunningham, born on July 28, 1974, in Yate.

However, the same was never confirmed. In 2017, DJ Goldie referred to Banksy as "Rob", whereas in 2023, reporter, Nigel Wrench asked if Banksy was called Robert Banks. Banksy responded to the same that his forename is Robbie. Hattenstone reflected on the secrecy around the artist and shared that "anonymity is vital to him because graffiti is illegal."

Among Banksy's most popular works, his best-known piece is Girl with Balloon, which features a young girl seemingly releasing a red, heart-shaped balloon. The painting initially sold for USD 1.4 million. It was resold a while later, but Banksy shredded the piece with a device he had built into the frame. The artist later renamed the piece, Love is in the Bin and sold it for USD 25 million three years later. According to The Telegraph, Banksy has also shown his support for Palestine over time through some of his artwork. One recent piece, seen on the side of the Royal Courts of Justice in London, features a judge hitting a protester with a gavel.
