Avantika Vandanapu is a popular rising American star of Indian-origin, who has been turning heads with her acting chops. She is the first Indian-American actress to play a lead role in Disney. She has recently bagged the series, Not Suitable for Work. Created by Mindy Kaling, the show is about young professionals navigating mattters of heart while managing their dream job and Avantika is one of the leads. Do you know, Avantika has many feathers to her cap and has been impressing audience since the age of 10?

Avantika was born to Hyderabad-origin Telugu family in San Francisco and her parents discovered her acting skills when she was just five. Her mother discovered a Facebook casting call for the Telugu language film, Brahmotsavam in 2016. Avantika grabbed the role and made her acting debut opposite Mahesh Babu at the age of 10. Revealing how she received many acting offers post her debut film, Avantika told Cosmopolitan:
“It was originally supposed to be a summer project, but I fell in love with it. One offer turned into 10 movies, and I stayed [in India] for four years.”
After her debut opposite Mahesh Babu, Avantika starred in films like Premam, Rarandoi Veduka Chudham, and Agyaathavaasi. Avantika was certain that acting was her calling and took drama lessons at the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco to hone her acting skills. She has also undergone acting training at Anupam Kher’s acting studio in Mumbai.

She also made her Tamil film debut in 2019 with the film, Boomika. Avantika transitioned into Hollywood projects. Her breakout role came in the Disney comedy musical Spin in 2021. She also featured in TV series such as The Wilde Bunch, Brat, Prince Ea, Brownies, Teen Depression PSA and theatricals like High School Musical and Aladdin Broadway Jr. Avantika gained further popularity when she played ‘Karen Shetty’ in Mean Girls in 2024.

Just like acting, Avantika developed her passion for dance at the age of five and is a trained classical dancer. She grabbed second spot in Dance India Dance Lil Masters (North America Edition) in 2014. She was hailed for her moves and expressions and earned the moniker young ‘Madhuri Dixit’.
She also grabbed the second winning trophy of the Zee TV reality show, Dance India Dance Lil Masters North America. In a conversation with the Cosmopolitan, Avantika spoke about her passion for dance and shared:
“I was always drawn towards the creative arts, especially the expressional aspects of dancing.”
Avantika was born in America and was raised as per Hindu culture by her parents, Anupama Reddy Chintala and Srikanth Vandanapu, who hailed from Hyderabad. Avantika moved to India at age nine and completed a portion of her secondary education through home-schooling. She was bullied in school for wearing a bindi but Avantika was always proud of her roots as she revealed, “As I’ve grown older, I have found a lot of comfort in my faith and my culture.”

At the age of 17, Avantika returned to the US and eventually settled in New York. She is currently an undergraduate at Columbia University. Avantika was recognised for her outstanding achievements and impact on both the international and Indian entertainment industries. Addressing her global acceptance, she told NDTV:
“Being honoured by such a prestigious institution as Harvard University is truly humbling and incredibly motivating. This award not only acknowledges my efforts but also underscores the significance of narratives transcending borders and the crucial role of Indian representation in global media.”
