Where Is Rachel Nickell's Son Alex Hanscombe Now? Why Witness Broke Silence 34 Yrs After Her Murder?

Netflix is back with yet another true-crime documentary, dredging up a sensational case. The OTT site's latest offering in the genre, which has generated immense online buzz, is the three-part drama series, The Witness and the companion documentary, The Murder of Rachel Nickell. The story follows the tragic July 15, 1992, murder of 23-year-old, Rachel Nickell on Wimbledon Common in South West London. The chilling crime remains as one of the most infamous and controversial cases in British criminal history due to a honey trap police operation, the arrest of an innocent man and several other issues.

Rachel was a part-time model, a wife, and a mom of a toddler when she died. She was sexually assaulted and stabbed 49 times in broad daylight, right in front of the eyes of her two-year-old son. Alex was left with a lifelong trauma as he grew up in the presence of his father, André Hanscombe. The scene of his mother's assault and murder remained fresh in his mind even after three decades had passed. However, he avoided interviews and didn't want to talk about the horrendous incident until for the Netflix documentary. Amid that, Alex and his father's whereabouts have been revealed.

Where is Alex Hanscombe and his father, 34 years after Rachel Nickell's death?

According to The Witness, André Hanscombe and his son, Alex Hanscombe live in Spain, where he has resided for several decades after leaving the UK following his wife, Rachel Nickell's tragic murder. The primary reason for his decision to relocate was to rebuild his life following the traumatic incident and to keep his then-two-year-old son, Alex Hanscombe, away from the public charter and constant reminder about his mother's passing. He wanted Alex to have a normal life by gradually getting over the horrendous incident he witnessed as a toddler. The father-son duo later moved to Spain in 1996 and has settled there for good.

André is 63 years old as of June 2026, and Alex is 36. André and Alex initially relocated from London to rural France in 1993 before moving to Spain. The reason was to find a peaceful environment away from the media buzz. They reportedly abandoned almost all of their possessions when they moved to the new place. They used to spend their time travelling and playing tennis to keep their minds occupied and not dwell on the biggest grief of their lives. André described their new home as  "idyllic" and shared the following poignant words:

"It felt like we'd left evil behind us...It was absolute bliss to have anonymity again."

While André hoped that France would bring him and his son solace and comfort, his wife's death still haunted them. Both André and Alex had to deal with their distinct pain. Andréé told The Times, "It brought to the surface things I hadn't dealt with from my own childhood...abuse when I was five, [and] my parents' separation." Talking about the psychological effect on his son, Rachel's husband shared that one day, while play-fighting with toy swords, the little one suddenly connected the game to his mother's death and made some heartbreaking comments. He mentioned:

"The bad man was sticking his things in her. A knife," he said. "I saw it all. All of it. It was hard to hear. This is your child, your baby."

Why did Alex Hanscombe break silence about his mother's death 34 years later?

Alex is currently a grown-up man and is in a better space than he was after three decades had passed following his mother's death. He is now an educated man who, according to My London, studied hypnotherapy and graphology in Barcelona. He also authored a book, Letting Go: A True Story of Murder, Loss and Survival, which speaks about the impact of the murder case. In his 30s, he received an offer from Netflix to appear in a documentary about the tragic murder case of Rachel Nickell, and Alex felt it was the right time to let the world hear his side of the story.

Alex and his father, André Hanscombe, chose this moment to turn a dark tragedy into a narrative focused on healing, truth, and institutional reform. They didn't just want the world to know about their pain; instead, they wanted to share their coping mechanisms and their transformed life after they finally found their peace in life. Alex shared that he wanted his account of their lives post the tragedy to serve as a guiding light to people, making them believe that every grief passes and life goes on for the living. He stated:

"It's easy to focus on the negative aspects of such a dark story, and it was really important for us to use this opportunity to show that this is a journey from darkness to light."
