The renewed interest comes after the Lifetime movie, which dramatizes the experience of Monica White, a woman who dated Robinson months before his 2021 arrest. The film stars Lela Rochon as White and Jarod Joseph as Robinson.
Monica White's account of dating Anthony Robinson before she realized he was a serial killer
Before Anthony Robinson became known as the infamous 'Shopping Cart Killer,' he was simply a single father from Virginia whom Monica White met online while she was trying to get back into dating after her divorce and sending her son off to college. The two met on the dating app Tagged in late 2020.
At first, their relationship seemed relatively normal. Robinson called and video-chatted with her regularly and told her about his life. But when they finally met in person in January 2021, Monica White began noticing behavior that made her uncomfortable.
White recalled Robinson telling her he didn't like being rejected by women. His behavior became increasingly uncomfortable during his visit. She recalled how things felt off the moment she picked him up at the bus station. "There were things that went up as red flags at the first visit,” she shared with PEOPLE in 2014. "He was like, 'Please don't judge me straight off the bat. Let's get to know each other. I don't like when women reject me.’ So that was a red flag right there."
During a later visit for White's birthday, his behavior became more disturbing. She alleged that he drank heavily, made inappropriate comments, and urinated in her bed. White then ended the relationship and refused a later offer of USD 500 to meet him at a motel.
Months later, Robinson was arrested in connection with the murders of Allene 'Beth' Redmon and Tonita Smith. When White saw his mugshot, she realized the man she had dated was accused of being a serial killer. "I knew something was wrong with him," White later said. Monica's story now forms the basis of Lifetime's The Dating App Killer: The Monica White Story, which premiered on Netflix this week.
Where is Anthony Robinson now?
Robinson is currently incarcerated in Virginia after being sentenced to two life terms plus 10 years for the murders of Allene “Beth” Redmon and Tonita Smith. His nickname, the 'Shopping Cart Killer', comes from the way investigators said Robinson moved the bodies of his victims.
In November 2021, authorities discovered the remains of Redmon and Smith in an undeveloped wooded area in Harrisonburg, Virginia. During Robinson's trial, jurors saw motel surveillance footage showing him entering a room with each woman on separate occasions and later leaving while pushing a shopping cart covered with a sheet.
Investigators said both women had been connected to Robinson through online dating. The evidence became a major part of the prosecution's case, ultimately leading to his conviction.
In January 2025, a Rockingham County jury convicted Anthony Robinson of two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated murder and two counts of concealing a dead body. The jury had recommended four life sentences, another 10 years and a USD 400,000 fine.
However, Judge Bruce D. Albertson later vacated the two first-degree murder convictions at sentencing. Robinson received life sentences on the two aggravated murder convictions, along with five years for each of the two body-concealment charges. He was also ordered to pay more than USD 205,000 in restitution.
The release and renewed streaming interest in The Dating App Killer: The Monica White Story has brought Robinson's case back into the spotlight. The movie focuses on White's experience and the frightening realization that the man she met through a dating app was hiding a deadly secret. Lifetime describes the story as one in which Monica begins connecting Robinson to a series of disappearances and realizes she may have narrowly escaped becoming another victim.
Today, Anthony Robinson remains incarcerated in a Virginia State prison, while his legal team pursues an appeal.
