Hema Malini and Dharmendra broke all societal norms when they tied the knot in 1980. The duo had an unconventional marriage, as the veteran actress fell in love with Dharmendra while he was already married to his first wife, Prakash Kaur. Surprisingly, Hema maintains a respectable distance from Dharmendra’s 'other family' as she doesn’t want to disturb them. However, she is a loyal woman, who can cross all the limits when it comes to her love.
Once, Hema Malini and Dharmendra sat for a joint interview with Stardust magazine in 1976, while the rumours about their alleged relationship were the talk of the town. The two legendary actors lived opposite each other back then, and Dharmendra would visit Hema whenever he wanted. During the interview, Hema Malini shared that her beau would fight with her every morning, but would eventually give in and they would make up. She shared:
“We start each day with a fight. We are fighting all the time. It is he who normally gives in and then we make up. Early in the morning when he comes to see me, he asks, ‘Why do you have a long face today and why are you spoiling my mood early in the morning?’ As if I can help it, I am born with a face like this. Then we fight.”

Though Hema's statement hinted that Dharmendra would find reasons to fight with her, it was not the case. In the same interview, Dharmendra expressed his views about the same and revealed that he had objections towards her posing with other actors, which was the main reason behind their arguments. In his words:
"I object to certain… poses… with the other heroes, you know."
Responding to Dharmendra, Hema Malini was quick to point out that she had also caught him clicking all kinds of pictures with all kinds of people. However, the actor clarified that all that was only for the picture and that there was nothing real in it. Hema was quoted as saying:
“As if I can’t object! So many times I have caught him in all kinds of pictures with all kinds of people.”

For the unversed, the interview took place four years before Hema and Dharmendra's marriage, wherein the former called Dharmendra her favourite person ever. Not just this, even Dharmendra went on to express that he was scared of what would happen to him if he and Hema ever parted their ways. To this, Hema promptly replied:
"I will never let anyone break this. From my side, at least, it is forever.”
In an interview with Lehren Retro, Hema Malini opened up about how she has often been hailed as a feminist icon for her decision to stay separately from her husband, Dharmendra and raise her daughters, Esha and Ahana, single-handedly. Mentioning that her husband has always been there for their daughters, Hema added she has never felt bad about living in a separate household from him. Talking about the same, she said:
“Nobody wants to be like that; it happens. Automatically, what happens, you have to accept. Otherwise nobody will feel like they want to live their life like this. Every woman wants to have a husband, children, like a normal family. But somewhere, it went out of the way… I am not feeling bad about it, or sulking about it. I am happy with myself. I have my two children, and I have brought them up very well.”
For the unversed, Hema Malini and Dharmendra are blessed with two daughters, Esha Deol and Ahana Deol.
