Tori Spelling Divorced Charlie Shanian After 15 Months Of Marriage, Cheated Him With Dean Mcdermott

Actress Tori Spelling recently got into a terrible accident when a speeding vehicle allegedly rammed into her car, leaving it disfigured and the occupants inside injured. Tori is a popular American actress who has starred in films such as A Carol Christmas, The House of Yes, Trick, Scary Movie 2, Kiss the Bride, and many others.

The accident has sparked interest in Tori Spelling, including her first marriage to Charlie Shanian, which lasted only for 15 months. Tori married Charlie in 2004 and divorced him in 2005. In 2006, Tori married McDermott and became a parent to five children. After two decades of married life, Tori and McDermott parted ways in 2025.

Tori Spelling loved the ‘idea of getting married’ to Charlie Shanian

Tori Spelling met actor-writer, Charlie Shanian, while performing in Shanian's play, Maybe, Baby It's You. More than Charlie, Tori loved his family, as their worlds were completely different. Tori, the daughter of late Hollywood mogul, Aaron Spelling and his shopaholic spouse, Candy, had never lived a “normal” life before marrying Charlie.

Tori Spelling got married to Charlie Shanian in 2004 and, for a while, led a simple suburban life with Shanian. Tori and Charlie were spotted in the gym, attending Mass and even going shopping. Talking about her attraction to Charlie’s family, Tori told People that Charlie was different from the people she'd dated before, and it was his family that caught her attention, as, according to her, 'It was total suburbia, something I’d only experienced on TV'. She wanted Charlie's family and was in love with the idea of being with him.

Despite living a normal life with Charlie, Tori knew that divorce was an escape hatch if needed. A year after a million-dollar lavish wedding, she cheated on him with her Mind Over Murder co-star, Dean McDermott. She met McDermott on the set of their film, Mind Over Murder, while both of them were married to others. Speaking about how she felt no regret on cheating on Charlie, Tori told People:

“The following day when I woke up next to Dean, I had no regrets. Something was really wrong with my marriage. Not only because I slept with this guy – though that certainly wasn’t a postive sign – but because I didn’t regret it.”

Though Tori found love in McDermott, she was terrified to call it quits with Charlie. She called him to her therapist’s office and told him that she was never in love with him. Charlie broke into tears and couldn’t accept it. When she told him that she had cheated on him, he was hurt and angry. Soon, Charlie filed for divorce from Tori and requested spousal support. After Charlie filed for divorce, Tori stated that she married him with the best intentions, but the marriage became a disappointment to her and to everyone involved.

Two years after their divorce, Charlie Shanian penned a lengthy essay for GQ describing how their marriage ended. He recalled how Tori would pick fights over petty things and wrote:

“She picked a fight with me at a party, told me she needed 'time and space,' and was gone before I could comprehend what had happened. Spelling only married me because I loved her and took care of her; she had purposefully shown me only 10 percent of her true personality; and, oh yeah, while in Canada, she'd cheated on me with her latest Lifetime-movie costar."

Charlie was devastated to read about his ex-wife's comments to People regarding their marriage and felt as if he had trapped her in an unhappy marriage. However, what hurt him most was learning that she had never loved him. After their split, Charlie and Tori cut ties completely, but years later, Tori tried to mend their relationship.

In Tori Spelling's 2014 season of her reality show, True Tori, she visited Charlie, and she felt heartbroken by realising how much she hurt him. She was seen crying in the show, while confessing to McDermott how safe she felt with Charlie, and when she left him, she felt all alone.
