On Saturday, July 11, 2026, the Irish MMA star made his first Octagon appearance in five years at UFC 329, stepping into the main event against Max Holloway at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. However, the fight had to end abruptly after McGregor suffered what appeared to be a serious right knee injury during his very first kick.
Conor McGregor breaks silence about his injury
Following the fight, McGregor admitted he was struggling to process what had happened. The 37-year-old insisted he entered UFC 329 in peak physical condition and had experienced no issues throughout training camp. McGregor also described his current emotional state in heartbreaking terms, writing that he was "beyond dark here." McGregor also described his current emotional state in heartbreaking terms, writing on X:
"My head gasket is gone. Destroyed. I had no injury/injuries going into the fight. I was throwing kicks, planted and jumping, all throughout camp as well as backstage before the fight. This came out of nowhere. I am beyond dark here. I can only describe it as hell."
The former UFC champion left the arena barefoot shortly after the fight and declined all post-fight interview requests.

The highly anticipated comeback barely had time to unfold before disaster struck. Just moments after the opening bell rang, McGregor launched a spinning kick at Holloway. However, the strike missed its target. As the MMA star planted his right leg, he slipped and fell awkwardly, immediately appearing to injure his knee.
Even Holloway appeared concerned as his opponent attempted to continue when it was clear that something was seriously wrong. McGregor was visibly struggling to put weight on his legs as he briefly tried to keep the fight going.
Eventually, the referee stepped in and waved off the contest, abruptly ending it in 69 seconds, and Holloway was handed a TKO victory. The defeat marked another cruel setback for McGregor, who was competing for the first time since suffering his horrific leg break against Dustin Poirier in 2021.
Despite benefiting from the stoppage, Holloway immediately showed respect for his longtime rival. In a heartfelt moment, Holloway himself rallied to McGregor's defence as the crowd jeered while he received treatment. Humorously noting that there will now be a third face-off, he announced:
"Let's give it up for Conor [McGregor], what an absolute animal. You guys are lucky because there is going to be a Holloway v McGregor three now. Let's get that money. It is what it is. I'll sit down with the UFC. There was so much hype for that. We have to run it back one more time. We need one more. I was looking forward to this. I was working hard to get to 170 [lbs] and fight this guy. For it to end like this, it sucks."
What's known so far about Conor McGregor's injury
While the exact nature of McGregor's injury has yet to be officially confirmed, early reports have suggested possible ligament damage in his right knee. If the injury proves to be an ACL tear or another significant ligament injury, the 37-year-old featherweight icon may need at least a year's rest for recovery. Unfortunately, it raises serious questions about whether or when he could fight again.

As we await further updates, it seems the MMA star has a lengthy rehabilitation ahead of him.
