While Vijay had ruled the theatres for ages with his effortless acting in front of the camera, Jason is all set to be behind the camera. Yes, the young lad is soon making his directorial debut with Sigma, starring Sundeep Kishan in the lead.
Jason reveals his equation with his father, Vijay
In an interview with Suma for her YouTube channel, Jason spoke about his love for cinema and revealed that it was his father's work that helped him understand cinema from a very young age. Jason always wished to study filmmaking, and his dad, Vijay, supported him since the beginning. Speaking about Vijay’s reaction when Jason told him about his wish to pursue filmmaking, the soon-to-be director said:
“When I told him I wanted to go overseas, be independent and pursue filmmaking as a course, he didn’t hesitate. He was the first one to give me a green signal because he has been in the industry for so long. More than my mother and my sister, he actually understood the importance of it.”
In the same interaction, Jason also revealed the one piece of advice Vijay gave him when he decided to pursue the course. Speaking about the same, Jason revealed that his father told him to do the course to understand the nuances of the profession. Vijay also showed his confidence in his son and was very supportive towards him.
Jason Sanjay dropped his father’s initials amid the latter’s divorce proceedings with Sangeetha
Jason Sanjay is the son of Vijay and Sangeetha Sornalingam. Before direction, Jason made a brief appearance as a child artist alongside Vijay in the 2009 film Vettaikaaran. Jason shares a very close bond with his father, Vijay. However, earlier this year, during Vijay and Sangeetha’s divorce proceedings, reports surfaced that Jason had dropped ‘V’ from his name. As per several local media reports, Sanjay was using the signature ‘Jason Sanjay S’ instead of his usual ‘Jason Sanjay V’. In South India, the initial generally refers to the father’s name. However, during that time, Sanjay was using his mother’s initial instead.
In an interview, Jason Sanjay reflected on his decision to become a director instead of an actor. He revealed that he had made up his mind about becoming a director years ago. He shared that acclaimed Malayalam filmmaker Alphonse Puthren had once approached him with an acting opportunity when he was around 20 years old. However, he declined the offer because he had already decided that directing was his true calling.
However, in the same interaction, Jason also mentioned that acting was not completely out of the picture for him. He shared that his future will be decided by how Sigma performs on screen. He stated:
"When you're a director, and you explain a scene to actors on set... there's an actor in me too. Right now, more than anything else, I have the huge responsibility of releasing Sigma and making it a success. That's where my entire focus is. Only after the film releases will I think about whether I want to act or continue directing."
