All of us have grown up believing in the love stories portrayed in the Hindi cinema. Be it Raj winning the trust of Simran’s father in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge or Pooja realizing her love for Rahul in Dil To Pagal Hai, Bollywood has made us believe in the notion of love. In real life too, a few actors had crossed all the limits to profess their love for their lady. One such actor was Sunil Dutt, who had tossed all the boundaries to prove his love for Nargis Dutt.

Sunil Dutt and Nargis had come from contrasting backgrounds. She was the daughter of Mohan Babu and Jaddanbai, he had belonged to a Punjabi land-owning family. Sunil Dutt and Nargis had met on the sets of Do Bigha Zameen and at that time, Sunil was an aspiring actor while Nargis was already an established star. But it was on the sets of Mehboob Khan’s movie, Mother India, where Sunil and Nargis had come closer and had expressed their love for each other. On March 11, 1958, Nargis and Sunil had secretly gotten married and had then announced the news to their closed ones.
Years later, Nargis was detected with pancreatic cancer and had travelled to America for treatment. Nargis was desperate to meet her family but when she had returned home, the actress was confined to the first floor and couldn’t meet people freely as there were a lot of restrictions imposed on her. Sunil Dutt had stood like a pillar of strength throughout her struggling time. In a throwback interview with a leading daily, Sunil Dutt and Nargis's son, Sanjay Dutt had recalled the day of his parents' 23rd wedding anniversary which was supposedly his mother's last one. Sharing details of her emotions that day, Sanjay had said, “The celebration of Mom & Dad's 23rd Wedding Anniversary on 11th March 1981 was a happy occasion. We dressed Mom up in her green and red wedding saree and a few others came over. She was a little sad that day and said to Dad, “I think this is my last wedding anniversary, Jio”. She had tears in her eyes. Dad sat next to her and we looked on in silence.”

Do you know that during the shooting of the iconic film, Mother India, a massive fire had broken down on the sets and Nargis was stuck in the fire? That was the moment when Sunil Dutt, like a true hero, did not care about his life while saving the life of Nargis. Sunil had gotten burnt badly and was in high fever too. It was Nargis, who had taken care of him day and night. During that time, the two had come closer to each other.

Nargis was categorised among one of the top-notched actresses of her era. But the stunning actress had left her superstardom to bring up her kids, Priya, Namrata and Sanjay. Sanjay was quite close to his mother and her untimely death had left a deep wound in his heart. Do you know that Nargis Dutt had passed away just three days before the release of Sanjay’s debut film, Rocky. In a 2018 interview with India Today, Sanjay had talked about his mother and had shared, "The most important thing is to be a good human being. Everything else comes after that. I learned from both my father and mother. I'm passing on to my kids. I hope my wife doesn't pamper my children the way my mother did me. My wife tells me if the kids don't hate the parents when they are growing up, there is something wrong in their parenting. I am tough to my children when I want to be tough."
