The day that changed history and the decades that led to it
Netflix's upcoming docuseries Turning Point: Generation 9/11, set to premiere on September 2, 2026, is based on the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and the long chain of events that made them possible. The roots of the story go back to 1979, when the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan.
During the 1980s, the United States, along with allies, supported Afghan mujahideen fighters against the Soviets. That conflict brought thousands of foreign fighters to the region, including Osama bin Laden. From that network, bin Laden formed al-Qaeda in 1988, an extremist group that turned its focus against the United States through the 1990s, carrying out bombings of embassies and the USS Cole.
By the summer of 2001, U.S. intelligence agencies were receiving an unprecedented volume of threat warnings, but failed to connect the dots. On the morning of September 11, 19 al-Qaeda hijackers took control of four commercial airliners on the East Coast.
At 8:46 a.m., American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan. Seventeen minutes later, at 9:03 a.m., United Airlines Flight 175 hit the South Tower. Both 110-story towers burned and then collapsed within less than two hours, sending a massive cloud of dust across New York.
At 9:37 a.m., American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the western side of the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, was headed for Washington but crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, at 10:03 a.m. after passengers and crew attempted to retake control. In total, 2,977 victims were killed, including 343 New York firefighters and 72 police officers.
The aftermath that created a generation
The second part of the event that Turning Point: Generation 9/11 will capture is everything that followed that day, a 25-year fallout that has defined an entire generation. Within hours of the attacks, President George W. Bush addressed the nation and declared a War on Terror.
In October 2001, the United States invaded Afghanistan to dismantle al-Qaeda and remove the Taliban regime that had harbored it. What was expected to be a short campaign became America's longest war, lasting nearly 20 years and costing more than 170,000 lives, including over 46,000 Afghan civilians. At home, the attacks transformed American life.
Congress passed the PATRIOT Act, the Department of Homeland Security was created, airport security was federalized, and the government authorized secret surveillance programs and enhanced interrogation techniques for terrorism suspects held at Guantanamo Bay and CIA black sites. The 2003 invasion of Iraq, justified in part by claims of weapons of mass destruction and ties to terrorism, further expanded the conflict.
Over two decades, the war in Afghanistan saw early military success give way to stalemate, corruption within the U.S.-backed Afghan government, and a steady resurgence of the Taliban. In August 2021, as U.S. troops withdrew, the Afghan government collapsed in a matter of days, and the Taliban returned to power, bringing the conflict full circle.
It is this entire arc, from the Cold War origins of al-Qaeda to the 2001 attacks and the 20-year war and policy shifts that followed, that the upcoming series is based on, examining how its consequences continue to shape the lives of those born in its shadow.
