There was a time when sangeet was a ‘ladies only’ affair. It was mostly conducted amongst the women on the bride’s side to herald her happiness, tease her and bless her. There would be dance, music, and a little party that would go on for three or four hours maximum. But for almost a decade now, sangeet has assumed an altogether new avatar. Almost every wedding is now preceded by a sangeet night, where the people on the bride’s as well as groom’s side perform on traditional, folk or peppy Bollywood songs.
So, here are the top ten things to keep in mind to make your sangeet night a big success:
You must choose the venue for the sangeet keeping in mind the convenience of your as well as your partner's friends and families. Make adequate arrangements for the appetisers, drinks and dinner. There should be ample space for your dance performances as well.
Since people from both the sides might participate, the sangeet is ideally held a day or two before the actual wedding day.
Sangeet can be an expensive affair. Just like you are budgeting your wedding, you need to budget your sangeet as well. You can either do the wedding and sangeet budget together or separately.
Mostly the people who can dance well take up the responsibility of the song selection and choreography. But, nowadays professional choreographers are being hired, who lend an expert touch to the overall ceremony.
Start planning for it at least a month in advance and make a list of all those who would be performing.
The bride’s family generally hosts the sangeet ceremony. But, it can also be hosted jointly by the bride and the groom’s side. The ones in-charge of the performances must co-ordinate amongst each other so that things go off smoothly.
Choose songs that suit the occasion. Pick some very romantic numbers and some that are aimed at teasing the to-be-weds. Try not to choose any controversial numbers, especially ones that are too raunchy. Remember kids as well as elders will be present at the sangeet.
Time the performances judiciously between the bride’s and the groom’s family. No one should feel left out.
Make sure the music system is in good shape and the DJ is booked at least three or four months in advance. Or else, you may have to make do with your home theatre system.
However grand and entertaining an affair is, it must come to an end. The sangeet should not be longer than an hour or 90 minutes at max. After that, people start getting bored.
Follow these tips and have a grand time at your sangeet. We hope it is a big hit!
