Tom Cruise is reflecting on his journey in a rare sit-down interview with GQ. The 64-year-old superstar appeared for the promotion of his new movie Digger and spoke about his time in the industry. For those who don't know, Tom completed 45 years in the film industry with his debut film, Endless Love, which was released in 1981. Now he's set to appear in a brand-new avatar. During the interview, Tom addressed everything from his famously intense approach to filmmaking and whether he fears death to getting older and why he has largely avoided interviews.
However, what is now catching everyone's attention is Tom Cruise's comment on being labeled the 'last movie star'. During a segment, he was asked what he thought of people calling him the "last movie star". However, Tom suggested that his efforts to mentor younger performers show he doesn't agree with the label. The actor admitted that there were several talented people in the industry.
Tom Cruise immediately pointed toward the other talented actors working today, specifically singling out Brad Pitt. He revealed that when he is on set with young stars, he sees how passionate they are. He shared that those skills come from practice and come with time. He was quoted as saying:
"There are really talented actors. Do you know what I'm saying? Like, Pitt is a great actor, great star, great charisma, and there are many, many, many… I'm on the set with great craftsmen as a young kid, and it's not just 1981 where they're there… It's generational, so as you're making movies, you're learning from other people, and then you're making it your own, but you're learning it is a skill, making films."
Tom Cruise on turning 64
Tom Cruise also spoke at length about other things, including death and turning 64. The actor admitted he tries to enjoy the journey rather than worry about what comes next. He shared that he enjoys living life on a physical and metaphorical edge and wants to understand life and cultures. And while he is not particularly untouched by emotions, he understands that life has its uncertainties, and hence he doesn't fear what he can't control.
When Tom was asked what he thought about turning 64, he joked and said, "It means I'm 64". He added that he was living his life and would always have dreams. However, he also knew how to accomplish those dreams and how to work towards them. He called life a constant learning experience. Later, while discussing his approach to life and work, he returned to getting older and was quoted as saying:
"You're asking me about being 64. There's so much life, and there's always another dream, and there's times in my life where someone was like, you've done so well, what else are you going to do? When I was a kid, I think we put our own barriers there. I think that a person without a dream has decided not to live. I've tested it for myself. It's true for me. I just have such big dreams, maybe, and it's something that doesn't stop, you know, and it doesn't stop."
