For those unaware, Tom and Gisele tied the knot in 2009 and were blessed with two children: a son named Benjamin and a daughter named Vivian.
While their marriage seemed perfect on the outside, the duo left fans surprised when they announced their divorce on October 28, 2022. In the new book, Anderson revealed several surprising and unknown details from when Tom and Gisele’s marriage was crumbling.
Tom Brady lost nearly 20 pounds and became an ‘empty shell’ before his divorce from Gisele Bundchen
By the time that Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen's marriage came to the end, the former appeared to have wasted away from the stress. According to Lars Anderson in Brady: An American Story and the Price of Greatness, Tom’s teammates became really worried for him as he lost nearly 20 pounds at that time. He also lost what the author described as his “vibrancy of spirit” in the days leading up to his divorce from Gisele in 2022. Former Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians said in the book:
“For Tom to lose that much weight, on his frame, it was a lot. It was very clear that the reason for the weight loss was the personal issues he was dealing with.”
Another coach claimed in the book that Tom Brady’s “cheekbones had freaking cheekbones.” The coach added that Tom’s appearance was so bad that he looked similar to a cancer patient, but the only difference was that he still had good hair. They pointed out that this stressed-out version of Tom was not close to the NFL quarterback they all loved. In their exact words:
“With all respect, he looked like a cancer patient with really good hair. He just seemed miserable, not even close to the Tom we all loved. He was so stressed.”

In addition to Tom Brady’s concerning appearance in the days leading up to his and Gisele Bundchen's divorce, Lars Anderson’s book Brady: An American Story and the Price of Greatness goes into detail about how the former power couple’s marriage unraveled. Anderson stated in the book that both Tom and the supermodel had made serious efforts to save their marriage. This included Gisele writing a ‘serious' and heartfelt letter to the football star.
Anderson wrote that it was after the New England Patriots’ 2018 Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles that Gisele “explained that their marriage wasn't working.” He added:
“She needed more of him, more of his time, more of his attention, more of his heart. Not responding to text messages on his constantly buzzing cell phone or replaying a game in his mind. She needed more help with the kids. She needed the chance to sleep in just a few days a week. She needed more time for her own career.”
One of Tom Brady's teammates questioned how many times fans saw him supporting Gisele's career. Pointing out how there were clearly some imbalances there, they said that Gisele was a “bigger international star” than her ex-husband. However, as per the biography, he made his own 11-day attempt to save his marriage with Gisele. He allegedly told coach Clyde Christensen that he had to “take care of some personal things” before he left the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ 2022 training camp.
Back then, Tom went to a private resort in the Bahamas with Gisele to work on their marriage. But things clearly did not work out, and when Tom returned 11 days later, the coach said that he was an “empty shell of who he was.”
