No one was harmed, but Al Roker and Craig Melvin were targeted. The intruder had entered the restricted area and was trying to find longtime weather anchor Al Roker. When the host was nowhere to be found, he used racist slurs on Craig Melvin.
Today show intruder has been arrested, and no criminal charges have been filed as of now
The intruder had snuck into the set of the Today show and lunged at Craig Melvin. He shouted racist slurs at Melvin and then was arrested by the New York Police Department. In a statement to the Hollywood Reporter, the official cops mentioned what exactly took place on the sets and said:
"At approximately 9:19 hours, it was reported to officers that there was a disorderly person inside 30 Rockefeller Center, within the confines of the Midtown North Precinct.”

It is worth mentioning that injuries were not reported and that the live broadcast of the Today show continued after the intruder was arrested. A shocked Redditor wrote, "This is horrible. It’s a depressing reminder that racism can occur anywhere. I’m shocked also that an intruder could get inside the studio. You’d think security would be like Ft. Knox after what happened to Savannah’s mom in February."
Another user on Instagram wrote, "So so very sad! Unbelievable that anyone would do such a thing!! The people on the show are the sweetest, kindest, most genuine people ever. Glad they're all safe; security needs to do better. Omg, with everything going on with Savannah, they let someone break in? Wow. They should tighten security. People are too crazed. That person should not have gotten that far."
Netizens also questioned how the intruder got past security. A few of the comments read, "Security should all be let go. How did he get past them? That’s horrible. Need a Security refresh. Thank goodness Craig and Al are ok. So happy you both are safe. I’m sorry. So sorry this happened to two wonderful men. Treasures to me. You are loved. Who’s that security guard? We need him."
The intruder had breached security and entered Rockefeller Plaza to reach the Today set located in Studio1A. The reason the intruder was looking for a Today host is not yet known. However, a TMZ report revealed that the intruder has yet not been formally identified. It has been confirmed that the individual was white and also had come unarmed.
Law enforcement officials revealed that the man had bypassed security and entered via a stairwell. He was then near the backstage dressing room where he failed to find Rocker. He then found Melvin and leaped at him. Reportedly, both the veteran correspondents then came on air 15 minutes later and appeared calm without indicating what had happened.
NBC News Today released a statement confirming a security incident this morning at the Today show studio. An individual entered an unauthorized area in a vestibule near Studio 1A. The person approached anchor Craig Melvin, who alerted security. The individual was detained and taken into custody by law enforcement without further incident. A part of the statement also read:
"There was no altercation, and no one was injured. TODAY is cooperating fully with law enforcement as they investigate the matter. NBC and TODAY take the safety and security of our employees, talent, staff and guests extremely seriously. We are reviewing the incident and our security protocols and remain committed to providing a safe and secure environment for everyone who works at and visits our studios.”
The incident took place amid Today host Savannah Guthrie announcing that she will be taking a few weeks off as she is filming a new project. Savannah had returned back to her anchor duties in April 2026 after she took time off post the disappearance of her mom, Nancy Guthrie.
