Tim Curry Dies After Battling Health Issues, Suffered Stroke In 2012, Had An Emergency Brain Surgery

As per reports, Tim passed away on August 25, 2026, at his home in Los Angeles. He has faced serious health issues over the years and reportedly succumbed to them. Law enforcement officers also shared their first statement following his demise, claiming that no foul play was suspected. Amid that, here's a look at Tim's health troubles over the years.
Tim Curry's health issues, he was paralyzed after his stroke led to a brain surgery
Tim Curry's exact cause of death has not been released as of yet. However, it is known that he had faced health troubles for years. The Rocky Horror Picture Show star suffered from a near-fatal stroke in July 2012 that left him partially paralyzed. Recounting that experience, Tim wrote a memoir titled Vagabond, which was published in 2025. Tim shared that he was having a massage when the stroke happened, and at first he didn't even understand what was going on.
It was Tim Curry's massage therapist who noticed the actor's physical troubles and insisted on calling 911. Even though Tim thought he didn't need emergency care and would be fine in some time, the masseur did the needful. Regarding that, the Emmy winner wrote, "I probably owe my life to the fact that he ignored me, went with his instinct and called an ambulance." The paramedics then checked his vitals, and he was rushed to the hospital.
Tim described the situation as "very frightening." At the hospital, the doctors diagnosed that the actor's stroke affected his brain and he needed immediate surgery. Then Tim was sedated and an emergency craniectomy (a brain surgery where a part of the skull is removed) was performed on him by an "incredible brain surgeon." Tim Curry revealed that his brain was inflamed and filled with blood, and stated:
"It turned out that my brain was inflamed enough, or filled with enough blood that bone from my skull had to be removed and implanted into my abdomen to keep my brain, and me, alive. Thankfully, the operation was successful (which was by no means guaranteed)."
Although Tim Curry's surgery was successful, his right side was left paralyzed as the stroke occurred in the right hemisphere of his brain. He had been in a wheelchair since the 2012 surgery.
Tim Curry's final years following his life-threatening stroke
Tim Curry had to slow down his career following his stroke and brain surgery. He couldn't take up many acting gigs, so he focused on voice acting. The 80-year-old was committed to his craft until the final months of his life. He tried to be engrossed in his work and not let his health hinder it. In a late 2025 update, he shared that he was still unable to walk, even more than a decade after suffering a stroke.
Tim revealed having issues in his right leg, which prevented him from dancing, singing or any activity involving movement. He sadly mentioned his fans won't be seeing him perform anytime soon, and stated:
"I still can't walk, which is why I'm in this silly chair, and that's very limiting. So I won't be singing, and I won't be dancing very soon. I still have real problems with my left leg."
Following Tim Curry's passing, his fans have shared their condolences and recalled his legacy as a pop-culture icon. He showed his acting prowess in both theatre performances and silver screen roles. He will forever be remembered for playing some of cinema's most celebrated cult and horror villains.
