Carolyn Bessette's Heated Feud: How Her Sister-In-Law, Caroline Kennedy's Son Sparked Family Fallout

FX's Love Story has been making rounds for its insight into the romance of John F. Kennedy Jr. and his wife, Carolyn Bessette. Their love story was cut short after they boarded the fatal flight in 1999. The limited series has become a fan favourite since its release, while also raising more questions among viewers. And now, the recent episode has given the fans a look inside Carolyn Bessette's heated moment with her sister-in-law, Caroline Kennedy.

Love Story Episode 7 looks inside Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy's tense moment with Caroline Kennedy

While FX's Love Story is a fictionalised account of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy's legendary romance, critics of the show have been quick to point out discontinuity between its script and the late couple's real-life relationship. At first, there were questions about Carolyn's hair and wardrobe. And recently, Daryl Hannah had to set the record straight regarding her "not even remotely accurate representation."

On the other hand, some scenes are, for the most part, historically accurate, including the fight between Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and her sister-in-law, Caroline Kennedy, in Love Story Episode 7. The scene takes place during a dinner party hosted shortly after John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn's extremely private wedding on Cumberland Island, Georgia. During the dinner party, Carolyn confronted Caroline following one of the incidents involving the latter's kid.

For the unversed, when one of Caroline's kids started getting rowdy, Carolyn took her downstairs to chill out. It's not clear whether the girl is supposed to be Rose or Tatiana, but in real life, it was Caroline's son, Jack Schlossberg, and not one of her daughters. Tensions rise from there. Ahead, a reminder of what happens next in Love Story and how Murphy's fictionalised retelling compares to the real thing.

The fight between Caroline Kennedy and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy took place at the dinner party hosted by the couple

After John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy said 'I do' in a secret ceremony on Cumberland Island, Georgia, the couple returned to New York City and hosted a small dinner for some friends who didn't make it to the wedding. While everything initially seemed to be doing well, things soon went south. JFK Jr.'s sister, Caroline Kennedy and her husband, Edwin Schlossberg, and the couple's three children came to the dinner, even though they were present at the nuptials. Caroline's son, Jack, was the ring bearer, and her daughters, Rose and Tatiana, were flower girls. JFK Jr.'s friend, Jack Merrill, later remembered the evening as a "classic Park Avenue dinner party", according to People.

What was the fight between Caroline Kennedy and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy about?

Caroline Kennedy's children were young at the time, and that made them "rambunctious." In her 2024 book, on the life of John F. Kennedy Jr., titled JFK Jr.: An Intimate Oral Biography, John's former assistant, Rose Marie Terenzio, wrote that Jack in particular was "running around and a little restless." Carolyn subsequently took him "in her arms" and "went downstairs with him into the lobby." The real incident contrasts with what we saw in Love Story, where it's one of Caroline's daughters, not her son. Given the presence of paparazzi gathered outside the building. According to an account by Rose Marie, however, Caroline was "upset" and felt that Carolyn was being "irresponsible".

Things got tense between Caroline Kennedy and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy following the dinner party

Recounting the exchange between Caroline Kennedy and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, Rose Marie Terenzio revealed that the latter was "shocked" that her sister-in-law, Caroline, thought she would "go downstairs and intentionally expose Jack to that." The author recalled what went down, noting that the building was secure thanks to three doormen and security guards. Rose Marrie shared how things got extremely tense between Carolyn and Caroline after the dinner party. The quote from the book could be read as:

"She was like, 'I would never do something like that—I would never take him outside in front of the paparazzi.' Carolyn said, 'It’s not like I took him outside. I took him down the elevator and back up. I wasn’t parading around the lobby with him.' She was surprised at the reaction. It was tense. After the fight, they were a little distant, but respectful."

Following the argument in Love Story, John F Kennedy Jr. is seen having lunch with his sister, Caroline Kennedy, to smooth things over. During the conversation, JFK Jr. allegedly told her that he's had a "stressful" few months and that "not talking" hasn't made things easier. In real life, however, the duo were famously close. A friend of the family told People that the two siblings and their respective spouses were "a little distant, but respectful" in the aftermath of the fight, but that's it. The source was quoted as saying:

"They would go over to Caroline's for dinner every few weeks. Carolyn would always bring gifts for the kids. [...] And she always picked something special for Caroline."
