The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is probably the most anticipated animated film of 2026. It is the sequel to the 2023 blockbuster hit, The Super Mario Bros. Movie. While the sequel has been confirmed for some time now, in the recent trailer drop, which came suddenly via a Nintendo Direct Presentation with Shigeru Miyamoto, it showed a new character whom fans have been eagerly awaiting since the original movie. Those of you who guessed 'Yoshi', you are absolutely correct. The cute green dinosaur is all set to join the OG characters like the plumbers as they begin their quest to face off against 'Bowser's' son across the galaxy.
The latest Super Mario Galaxy Movie trailer offered viewers their first look at ‘Yoshi’. Previously, his character's arrival was hinted at in the 2023 film's post-credits scene. In the new movie trailer, our favourite OG characters, ‘Mario’ and ‘Luigi’, take him under their wing after they come across a scared ‘Yoshi’ while fixing a broken pipe. Reportedly, ‘Yoshi’ will become one of the most loyal sidekicks to his helpers.

Those who have played the Nintendo games that the movie is based on might be aware that ‘Yoshi’s’ character appears in quite a few of them, including Mario Kart and Mario Party. On top of this, the green dinosaur even has its own franchise titled Yoshi's Island. Here, he boasts some significant abilities, such as eating his enemies and turning them into eggs and carrying his friends on his back like a steed whenever the need arises. However, the cutest ability that he has is his signature flutter-jump.

While fans of the movie are super excited about the arrival of ‘Yoshi’ in the new Super Mario Galaxy Movie, there are also other characters who are set to appear in the film for the first time. For instance, in the trailer, we see ‘Birdo’ emerge as an enemy of ‘Princess Peach,’ aggressively battling her by throwing eggs. Another familiar face who makes his screen debut is ‘Mouser’, the rodent boss character from Super Mario Bros. 2. 'Koopa Lakitu' from the 1985 game, Super Mario Bros., is also seen in action, fighting against ‘Mario’, ‘Luigi’, and ‘Yoshi’. In addition to these characters, viewers will also get a glimpse of ‘Baby Mario' and ‘Baby Luigi'.

The upcoming animated film sequel features a star-studded cast. Chris Pratt will return to voice ‘Mario’s’ character while Charlie Day will voice his brother, ‘Luigi’. Anya Taylor-Joy will lend her voice to ‘Princess Peach', the ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom. Jack Black will voice ‘Bowser’ and Keegan-Michael Key will voice the mushroom, ‘Toad’. New additions to the cast include Bennie Safdie and Brie Larson, who will lend their voices to ‘Bowser Jr.' and ‘Princess Rosalina', respectively. Notably, the voice actor for ‘Yoshi’ hasn't been revealed yet, leaving fans guessing who could take on the role.
