'The Rip', True Story Behind Matt Damon And Ben Affleck's Crime Thriller Trending On Netflix

The Rip is trending on Netflix, and stars Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Catalina Sandino Moreno, and Kyle Chandler. It was released on Netflix on January 16, 2026, and it is already trending at the top. The crime thriller is based on the true experiences of the investigating officer, Casiano. The film shows how a raid shows people's true colours and how money can make people sell their souls, loyalty, and how difficult it is to choose between duty and loyalty when one cannot escape temptations. 

What is the true story of The Rip?

The writer-director, Joe Carnahan, revealed that the film shows devil's work in every scene. The film is inspired by the day of the raid, which could take shape after years of investigative work. The Rip is based on how a long-probe led to the busting of a marijua** trafficking operation which was stretched from South Florida to Tennessee. It was busted surveillance, confidential sources, wiretapes and coordinated teamwork across state lines. 

It was June 2016 when the Miami Lakes home was raided by Casiano and his team. It belonged to Luis Hernandez-Gonzalez, who was the owner of Blossom Experience in North Miami, which was a gardening supply store. It was reported that the story was often visited by mariju*** growers from across the country. The man in question was on the radar of law enforcement for years.

To bust the circle of dr** dealers, the detectives regularly followed customers after they left his shop. In 2005, Dr** Enforcement Administration agents revealed that Hernandez-Gonzalez talked about mariju*** sales while he was under surveillance. However, they were unable to put any charges on him. It was five years later when a source secretly recorded him discussing cultivation techniques and his offer to purchase the future crop. However, the major recording couldn't prove his involvement in the dr** trafficking. 

Then, in 2016, Hernandez-Gonzalez was caught on a wiretap as he gave growing advice to South Florida marijua** traffickers who were arrested by federal agents in Tennessee. Soon, an investigation was followed by raiding his business, then executing a search warrant at his Miami Lakes home. It was outside his home, and the narcotics team's dog alerted the team with an unmistakable signal. He marked the territory by urninating which meant a large sum of currency, officers quickly took action. In the attic, which had a concealed opening, they discovered 24 five-gallon buckets packed tightly with bundles of USD 100 bills. Along with it, they found marijuna** strains which were labelled as anabolic steroids and a loaded TEC-9 pistol.

Soon, the officers counted the seized cash by hand twice before anyone could leave the spot as per department protocol. It locked Casiano and his team inside the home for hours. It gained a lot of attention in the residential neighbourhood. Home surveillance cameras also captured their every movement as they worked. It has been reported that the counting of cash ended more than a day later, and it was USD 24 million, a record-setting raid by the department, and no one took a signal dollar. 

After this, Hernandez-Gonzalez was charged with marijuana trafficking and money laundering. IN 2018, he was sentenced for 65 months in prison for financial crimes tied to the operation. The incident was the most important in Casiano's life, and soon it was developed by Carnahan's imagination. Carnahan recalled that Casiano talked about the amount of money he saw and how it could take the soul on a wrong path. 

It was in 2021 that Casiano's young son Jaked died after he was diagnosed with cancer. This re-shaped the story of the film, The Rip. Matt Damon's character, 'Lt Dane Dumars, was now carrying the weight of a son who passed away too soon. The crime thriller added a more personal touch, and when Casiano heard the story, he was moved by the screenplay and how his son's story was handled in the film. The Rip is dedicated to Jake, and his name is the first to emerge during the closing credits.
